    #6 – Apple vs. Windows

In 325, the Council of Nicaea settled a dispute in the Christian Church over whether or not Jesus was God or the first creation. Arianism purported that Jesus was not God, but the first creation of God. The council ruled against Arianism and orthodox Christian beliefs became clearer.

Today the church is facing a similar dispute, not as important, but perhaps more vitriolic than that which was resolved in 325. The dispute between Apple and Windows rages on today and, without drastic measures like those taken by Constantine in 325, we may never find a resolution.

The world argues back and forth about which computers and operating system are superior and those arguments have seeped into the church as well. Church staff, ushers, greeters, custodians, choir directors, PowerPoint techs, the guy who hugs instead of shaking hands during greeting time; these people and more all have an opinion on which platform they prefer. And it’s not only an opinion of which they prefer, but it’s derision towards the one they do not embrace.

The dispute between Apple and Windows is divisive. Much like the Civil War it can separate brother from brother. Much like the choice between Team Edward or Team Jacob, it can push friends apart. The issue is so divisive because we can’t toe the line; whatever choice we make, we have to throw everything we are behind that choice and avoid the other, like when we see another church member at a rated R movie.

The problem with viewing Apple and Windows from a Christian perspective is that we can see a bit of God in both operating systems. Someone who supports Apple could say that his new Macbook reflects the character of God because of its simple beauty and the way it will help him to create. Someone who supports Windows could say that her new Dell reflects the character of God because it works in a very ordered and logical way, like a creator who crafted a planet specifically suited for life to thrive.

This blog is not the Council of Nicaea and I doubt the dispute between Apple and Windows will be resolved today. Whatever side of the issue we stand on, though, it’s important to remember what Jesus said to his disciples: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” But if love is too high an expectation, depend on grace and try to hide the disdain in your voice when speaking to your pastor who obviously hasn’t seen the light of your preferred platform.

Which platform to you prefer and how do you think it reflects the character of God?

When you post tech-y pictures like the Apple icon, it makes it easier for me to read your blog at work 😉
Keep up the blogging – it’s good for the soul.

Oh. Yeah. And PCs = Jesus. We’re supposed to be in the world, not of it. And MACs are most certainly whoring themselves to the masses while PCs have remained true to their maker as opposed to selling out and giving into the ‘cool factor.’

      (But I love my MacBook!)

Even though your goal is just to lose 5 pounds in
a week, you should be strict with what you do so as not to inadvertently undo all your hard work for vegetarian weight
loss. Withdrawal from levothyroxine can be done but it takes 6 weeks of withdrawal for the remaining thyroid tissue to be completely starved.
Do not be tempted to lose weight as quickly as you can,
because a crash diet will have you eating less than
a thousand calories a day slowing down your metabolism.

If you find it a bit maddening to follow the daily fluctuations of the scale even
though you are eating properly, pick three days of the week on which you will always weigh yourself (for example, Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday). In fact, I always suggest to those overweight
vegetarians to keep to a max of 4 pounds a week so you won’t suffer loose skin post weight loss. Many people don’t
have the time to weight themselves every day, but checking the
scale on a regular basis can definitely help when you’re working to lose weight and keep it off.

good ones. Now, the average healthy amount people
are supposed to lose is 2 pounds per week.
