I didn’t know anything about George R. R. Martin’s fantasy epic A Song of Ice and Fire before HBO’s series Game of Thrones. While I’ve watched some episodes of the television series, I have been much more invested in the novels.
I read the first book before the first season, the second book before the second season and the third book before the third season. I finished the fourth book ahead of the fourth season but couldn’t wait to read the fifth book. I just finished A Dance with Dragons and I’m now held captive by the whims of George R. R. Martin.
I love Martin’s story and I’m fully invested in characters like Daenerys Targaryen Tyrion Lannister and Jon Snow. Every time I finished the other books, though, I had another book to look forward to. Now, though, I have to wait for Martin to finish his 1,500-page manuscript. He took six years between books four and five. I really don’t want to wait until 2017 for book six.
I don’t think I’ve ever experienced this sort of waiting with a book series before. I read the Harry Potter series after all of the books had been published. And the Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings had long been published when I sat down to read them.
I hate having to wait on my media. I hated waiting between the sixth and seventh seasons of The Next Generation, I hated waiting to see what happened with Battlestar Galactica after they found earth and I really hated waiting to see what happened after Jim kissed Pam on The Office.
Patience is a fruit of the Spirit, one that I definitely need more of in my life. God uses traffic lights and lines at Costco to test and grow my patience; he was doing fine without George R. R. Martin and A Song of Ice and Fire. Even though Martin isn’t concerned with my spiritual life, he’s still playing a part in its development.
