I enjoyed Thor and thought that it was a good movie. This really isn’t a review, simply some thoughts on Thor from a Christian perspective. I’ll do my best to keep things spoiler-free but I can’t promise I won’t reveal Bruce Wayne’s cameo.
Gods
Thor is the god of thunder from Norse mythology. In the movie Thor, Thor is just a powerful resident from another dimension. In the Marvel universe there aren’t really any gods, just powerful creatures from different dimensions. While there’s no mention of the Godhead, it’s reasonable to assume that in the Marvel universe the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are just powerful creatures inhabiting another dimension. Obviously these thoughts didn’t cross my mind while watching Thor smash things with Mjölnir. I don’t think that Marvel has an anti-Christian agenda; it’s just that the son of Odin makes for a much more exciting super hero than the Son of Man.
Humility
While Thor may lend itself to a skewed vision of the Holy Trinity, it does have a lot to say about humility. Thor is exiled from Asgard because of his pride and arrogance. The movie shows that there are consequences for pride and arrogance. When Thor isn’t smashing things with his hammer, it’s enjoyable to see the process he goes through to lose his arrogance and find his humility. While he doesn’t exemplify Philippians 2, Thor does show that if humility is possible for the god of thunder then it should be possible for us.
Long Hair and Beards
Thor may just be a Norse mythology, but he and Jesus have two things in common: long hair and a beard. I don’t know if this look is just good for gods and the Son of God but I’d like to see it on me. Unfortunately I’d have better luck wielding Mjölnir or feeding 5,000 than I would growing a beard. I’ve had long hair before, but Thor’s was much straighter, more luscious and far blonder than mine. There’s a long list of reasons why I want to be like Jesus but long hair and a beard would definitely be on that list.
Thor was a great way to start the summer and definitely got me excited for Captain America later this year and The Avengers next summer.
What did you think about Thor?
