A lot of my friends growing up were nerds. I had a friend in the 8th grade who wore his Starfleet uniform shirt for his class picture, complete with comm badge and captain’s rank insignia. Obviously, for the rest of that year, he was known as “Star Trek guy”, which didn’t seem to bother him one bit. He liked Star Trek and he was clearly expressing that affinity.
Most nerds are excited to express their love for their favorite nerdclinations.
I do this a lot through shirts. I have a few Star Wars shirts that I regularly wear. I even have a Battlestar Galactica shirt that has made its way into my regular clothing rotation. I happily tweet about the video games I’m playing and the nerdy movies I’m planning on watching. If I have love for a nerdclination, I’m willing to express that love through various actions.
Why can’t I do the same thing for Jesus?
This weekend I preached about expressing our love for Jesus. So often we say that we love Jesus but don’t put that love into action. It’d be like someone saying they love Harry Potter without ever reading the books, watching the movies or participating in an actual quidditch league. If we say that we love Jesus then there should be expressions of that love, when we’re around others and by ourselves.
So if we can dress up like Jedi for a movie premier, write fan fiction about the further adventures of Buffy and Spike and rewatch every episode of Firefly 25 times, what can we do to show Jesus some love?
How do you express your love for Jesus?
