I loved Transformers as a little kid. I would watch the cartoon and have epic battles between my Autobot and Decepticon toys. That excitement was rekindled when the first Transformers movie came out. That excitement was extinguished after the second Transformers movie. With Transformers: Dark of the Moon, my excitement for giant fighting robots was tempered by my lowered expectations.
I’m happy to say that Transformers: Dark of the Moon exceeded my lowered expectations. That isn’t saying much but at least it didn’t have any robot genitalia.
Below are some Christian thoughts about Transformers: Dark of the Moon. As always I’ll try to keep things spoiler free, but Shia LaBeouf swinging from trees with Optimus Prime was rather ridiculous.
Purpose
After saving the world twice, Sam Witwicky is having some trouble reentering into normal life. Sam isn’t satisfied with delivering mail because he feels like his life should have more purpose. This is something with which we can all wrestle. I know that I always wonder if my life has purpose or if I’ll do anything significant. It’s easy to get discouraged when we see others making an impact that we can only dream about. We’re not the ones who give our lives significance, though. God has created us all with a purpose, our own purpose that doesn’t belong to anyone else. We need to trust in that purpose and faithfully do the work God gives us.
Lust
As a director, Michael Bay has mastered explosions and sexuality. This is clearly evident in his Victoria’s Secret commercials that feature lingerie models and inexplicable explosions. The first two Transformers were littered with as many lingering shots of Megan Fox as there were of giant robots. In Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Megan Fox was traded out for Rosie Huntington- Whiteley to the same effect. Every male in the movie, human and robot, spent some amount of time lusting after Huntington-Whiteley’s character. She was there to be objectified and she filled her role perfectly. Obviously Hollywood’s abuse of lust isn’t going to change. It should give us pause, though, and make us think if the amount of objectification can be justified by the amount of robots fighting.
Optimus Prime
There isn’t a lot to say about Optimus Prime from a Christian perspective. I know Jesus is infinitely more awesome than Optimus Prime which means Jesus is unspeakably amazing. I love Optimus Prime. Even in the second Transformers movie, Optimus Prime was still totally sweet. I have such a deep-seeded love for Optimus Prime that I still get goosebumps when he breaks out his energon sword and starts busting fools. As a 29-year-old man, I literally had goosebumps whenever Optimus Prime did anything. I really am a nerd.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon wasn’t a great movie but it was entertaining. There wasn’t as much to ponder since Jesus never participated in an hour-long action sequence. Had he, though, I’m sure Jesus would be twice the Autobot that Optimus Prime is. Because if “more than meets the eye” ever applied to anyone, it was Jesus.
What did you think about Transformers: Dark of the Moon?
As I’m on a mission trip this week and next, the blog is on autopilot for the rest of this week and might not get updated next week. Thanks for your understanding. – Scott
I thought transformers 3 was awesome. It was way better then the 2nd movie. I was surprised when sental prime betrayed the autobots I was not expecting that. I am a huge transformers fan I have the whole g1 series on DVD.
