Last night my wife, Alycia, basically told me, “Why don’t you play Skyrim while I put up all of our Christmas decorations?” At that moment I wasn’t sure if I had ever loved her more. Alycia understands my desire to play Skyrim because she plays it almost as much as I do. She’s a bit of a nerd herself and I am ecstatic that she embraces my nerdiness as much as she does.
Here are some biblical lady nerds who may have also embraced nerdiness.
The Witch of Endor
For some reason when I picture the witch of Endor I imagine the Wicked Witch of the West hanging out with Wicket. Then I start thinking about Wicked and whether or not Elphaba was really that wicked to begin with. Of all the women in the Bible, the witch of Endor was most likely to be a nerd. She liked spells, chants and Ewoks. If anyone could embrace the nerdclinations of today’s modern nerd, it would definitely be her. Granted, contacting the dead goes beyond nerdiness and into evil things opposed by God, but maybe she was like Elphaba, just misunderstood.
Martha
Martha gets a bad rap. In Luke 10, Jesus visited the home of Mary and Martha and, while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet, Martha worked around the house. Jesus told Martha that Mary chose what was better. Maybe Martha was a bit of a neat freak and just wanted to make sure that everything was right for Jesus. One of the main attributes of a nerd is obsessive behavior; maybe Martha was just obsessive about having a clean home. Sure, sitting at Jesus’ feet was better, but if he hadn’t been there I’m sure Martha would have been more than happy to have her guests play Skyrim while she cleaned up around the house.
Priscilla
The husband and wife team of Aquila and Priscilla were missionaries in the early church along with Paul. When Apollos was preaching about Jesus but didn’t know about the baptism of the Holy Spirit, Aquila and Priscilla were the ones who set him straight. Priscilla was a straight-up God nerd who was highly educated and knew plenty about the scriptures. There’s even speculation that Priscilla is the author of Hebrews. If that’s true, then Priscilla is a genius because Hebrews is wicked smart and totally hard to understand. I don’t know if Priscilla would be down for Skyrim but she would definitely dominate at Bible trivia.
I love my wife for a lot of reasons and one of those is that she’s a nerd like me. I also love her because she’s not a witch, though I wouldn’t mind if she had an Ewok.
What other lady nerds are in the Bible?
I’d say Abigail was one– I wouldn’t have been able to make such a quick decision with all that math to figure out how many supplies I would have needed before I went to see David. She was also able to make decisions and was able to reason with David before he made a poor decision.
Esther had the gift or persuasion to prevent her people from being killed. I could have used her as my debate partner 😛
Last, but not least, the Proverbs Wife. Clearly she had the management skills to get everything done, was a business woman for her husband, and probably had enough time to play Skyrim!
