As stated before, I’ve never read any of the Harry Potter books or seen any of the Harry Potter movies. I realize that it’s a giant blindspot in my nerd life and somewhat hurts my nerd cred, which is not nearly as cool as street cred. To rectify that situation, though, I’ve decided to finally read the Harry Potter books and I’d like you to join me.
I know a lot of you have probably already read all seven books numerous times. If that’s the case, then why not read them again and share your thoughts and reflections? Perhaps you’re like me and you’ve never gotten around to reading them. Well here’s your chance to participate in something of an online book club for Mr. Potter. And if you haven’t read them because you think they’re evil, please don’t hold it against me that I’m going to read them.
I’m going to start with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. I’m not going to read the books back-to-back; I’d like the opportunity to read something other than Harry Potter for the next few months. I’ve broken down The Sorcerer’s Stone into four sections which I’ll be reading over the next month and blogging about on Fridays. So if you’d like to follow along you can read the section and share your thoughts on the corresponding day.
January 27 – Chapters 1-5
February 4 – Chapters 6-9
February 11 – Chapters 10-13
February 18 – Chapters 14-17
I realize that reading plan might not be too ambitious but I don’t want to bite off more than I can chew. I would love for you to share your thoughts as I blog through the book and share my own thoughts.
If you do decide to share your thoughts, please follow some simple rules.
No Spoilers
I have never read any of these books and have never seen any of the movies. I have no idea what happens other than Voldermort’s the bad guy and Harry’s the good guy. I don’t know why Voldermort’s bad and I don’t know how a bunch of British kids end up locked in a mortal struggle against him. Please do not share information beyond what I’ve read. It’d be like telling someone that Luke and Leia were brother and sister right after they kissed.
Don’t Get Crazy
I understand nerd passion and fervor. I cried after the last episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation and still haven’t forgiven Rupert Murdoch for broadcasting episodes of Firefly out of order. I understand that a lot of you are probably very passionate about Harry, Ron, Hermione, every other character and all the minutiae of J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world. However, I haven’t lived with these characters or this world for over a decade and my passion won’t reach the same level as a lot of you. If I forget to mention your favorite part or ignore one of your favorite minor characters, please don’t Hulk-out on me. I’m just a Star Wars nerd trying to expand my nerd horizons.
There might be some more rules that pop up along the way but that’s it for now. I’m looking forward to finally beginning Harry Potter and I hope that you’ll join in.
Have you read Harry Potter? If so, how many times? If not, why?
This sounds like a great idea! I have just began reading and posting book reviews on my blog. I finished and wrote about The Hunger Games this past week. I would love to read Harry Potter and discuss it with you. However, as I usually do not like that genre of novel, I’ll read the first one and see if I am intrigued enough to read on. I have owned the books for years and have been meaning to read them. Why not take the time to do so now?!
I have. How many times? I cant remember.
I am due for a Potter re-read… count me in!
(And I got choked up at the end of TNG, too. “The sky’s the limit,” indeed – lovely moment!)
Once you pick it up you won’t be able to put it down. I love the Harry Potter books it wad the first series that got me to read for fun.
I was getting all excited thinking that this would be a debate and it turns out it’s not. LOL.
I’ve read the entire series at least twice, from the very first book to the last. It’s interesting really, because as a reader one can observe how Harry matures and the tone of the books gets darker, but deeper.
Whoops– I hope that wasn’t a spoiler! :p
I figured things got darker and deeper from the movie posters of the years. 🙂
