Every year there are a number of nerdy and genre films released. Most the biggest releases come out during the summer. This coming summer is no different with the releases of The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises among others. However, the winter and spring aren’t strangers to nerdy releases. Here’s a preview of the nerdy movies coming out in the next few months.
Chronicle – February 03
I didn’t even know this movie existed until I saw a commercial. Apparently some teenagers gain superpowers and use them as most teenagers would: they wreak havoc and steal stuff. To me this movie is like the “What if…?” comics. Chronicle seems to be the movie version of “What if the X-Men didn’t have Professor Xavier?” I spend a lot of time with high school students and I can’t even imagine the pranks they would pull if powered with telekinesis, optic blasts or flight.
Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D – February 10
I know it may damage my nerd credibility but I am so excited to see Episode I in 3D. Jar Jar Binks is annoying. Jake Lloyd can’t act. And the best character of the movie, who is prominently displayed on the poster, dies too soon. In spite of all that, though, I still can’t wait to see the yellow crawl, podracing and Darth Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber in 3D.
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance – February 17
I didn’t see the first Ghost Rider which released in 2007. I also I haven’t seen any of the 14 movies Nicholas Cage has been in since the first Ghost Rider. When it comes to movies it seems like Nicholas Cage definitely has a quantity over quality philosophy. I heard that the first Ghost Rider wasn’t very good and, based upon his recent track record, I don’t have a lot of hope for Spirit of Vengeance. I never really read the Ghost Rider comic book because the whole demon possession angle reminded me too much of the scariest parts of the Bible.
John Carter – March 09
I’ve never read any of the John Carter comics but I’m really looking forward to this movie. I like the idea of a human fighting Martians after all the sleep I lost worrying about Martians abducting me. I’m also excited because Andrew Stanton, who directed WALL-E and Finding Nemo, is making his live-action directing debut. I certainly hope John Carter is successful because I lost a lot of sleep over fear of alien abduction and I don’t think one movie will satisfy my need for vengeance.
The Hunger Games – March 23
I was worried that the last Twilight movie would come out without something to take its place. Thankfully The Hunger Games has put those fears to rest. Most of the females in my life, from high school students to adults, have read The Hunger Games series. I’m in no real rush to read the books and I’m in less of a rush to see the movie. A Christian review of the movie, though, might spark interest from the female nerd community; they’re the sleeping giant of Internet users.
Wrath of the Titans – March 30
I’ve seen both the original Clash of the Titans and the remake, which has spawned this sequel. We watched the original in my 6th grade history class because my teacher was bad and thought that old movies were better than actual instruction. I saw the recent remake with my sister and we both went in with extremely low expectations. The movie met our expectations and entertained us for two hours. I imagine this sequel will be just as enjoyable with just as low expectations.
Looking at these six movies makes me even more excited for May 4 and the release of The Avengers. Until then, though, we’ll just have to tide ourselves over with secondary comic book characters and re-releases of 13-year-old movies.
What nerdy movies are you looking forward to over the next three months?
Ghost Rider is a really good movie! You forgot George Lucas’s Redtails movie that is coming out.
