I didn’t go to Comic-Con this year; I’m really thinking about going next year. I did keep up on a lot of the news that came out from Comic-Con. Here are some of the stories that piqued my interest.
Guardians of the Galaxy
Along with Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: Winter Soldier, Marvel is also releasing Guardians of the Galaxy. The movie will be based on a lesser-known team of super heroes, the Guardians of the Galaxy, which includes heroes like Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer and Rocket Raccoon. I don’t know anything about the Guardians of the Galaxy but I’m already excited to see how they fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since the galaxy was created through Jesus, he would be its ultimate guardian, but I don’t think he’ll make the team roster. I’m all right if Jesus isn’t in the movie because there will be an anthropomorphic raccoon and I will want to keep him.
Man of Steel
I don’t like Superman; I even dedicated an entire post to how lame he is. There wasn’t a lot of news about Man of Steel but there were some new posters. I’ll probably end up seeing Man of Steel even though the new suit looks like red and blue tire tread. I’m worried that Man of Steel will be boring like Amazing Spider-Man was boring. The movie goes through Superman’s origin story as he struggles with embracing his powers. I don’t want to see Superman, but I really don’t want to see him whine about his powers and wrestle with himself. It’d be like watching a Samson movie and never getting to see him beat up some Philistines.
World War Z
Zombies scare me. Even with that fear, though, I have been really interested in the book World War Z. The book follows a journalist as he interviews survivors of a worldwide zombie apocalypse. The movie based on the book has had some problems. The movie abandoned the journalistic plot of the novel for a more conventional “race to stop the impending zombie apocalypse” plot. The movie has also gone over budget, massive reshoots have been scheduled and the movie’s star, Brad Pitt, is reportedly no longer speaking to the director, Marc Forster. I think everyone just needs to read the Sermon on the Mount and figure out how to resolve conflict in a godly way.
I spend a lot of time reading the Bible and praying through the daily offices, but I also read a lot of nerd news. All the stories coming out of Comic-Con really got my nerd gears going and I can’t wait to see a lot of these movies and add some new nerdclinations to my mix.
What news out of Comic-Con got you excited?
Well, it’s a good thing I’ve gone a year without knowing you don’t like Superman. I shall have to convince you otherwise someday. (Guess I’ll start by checking out your post and rebutting it, point for point….!) Everyone’s *all* about the Batman…. sigh.
And you thought ASM was boring? Were we watching the same film? I didn’t think it was the greatest movie ever, but I was certainly engaged and entertained, start to finish. I didn’t think the Lizard translated overy well to screen as a baddie, but… You must be a hard man to please!
As regards your actual question, I’m excited by news of a brand-new, no-EU “Star Wars” comic; and I am also mildly curious about Gaiman’s new “Sandman” comic. I’m also excited to hear “The Hobbit” is getting people excited – but this seemed a quiet year for me on the news front.
I was mostly bored for the first 45 minutes of ASM. I was just waiting to get past the origin stuff so I could see him swing.
Uh?? Twilight: Breaking Dawn 2.. Duh..
Scott- Greetings, I just came across your blog and have to agree with your assessment of Supes (comic books) and ASM. Although I adored Christopher Reeve and his portrayal. (And I dug the very flawed Lois Lane in that film.) I just wished they had stopped at the first one. *Sigh* Our group attends a few southern cons and we are looking at trying to get some members together to have a presence at SDCC next year.
Sigh. Why does everyone pile on Superman? Tracy, while I actually enjoyed Superman II, I can see flaws in the theatrical release (and I agree that we would have been better off without SIII, SIV, or Superman Returns). But allow me to recommend the Richard Donner cut of S II, especially in a back-to-back watching of the first film.
