The teaser poster for Star Trek Into Darkness released yesterday and it reminds me a lot of the poster for The Dark Knight Rises. I think they will be very different movies and I’m already getting excited to once again go where no one has gone before.
Along with the poster the official synopsis for Star Trek Into Darkness released last week.
“In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.”
That synopsis doesn’t really tell us that much about the movie, other than the fact that there will be a lot of conflict centered on a “one-man weapon of mass destruction.” The synopsis doesn’t tell us that much about the plot, but it does tell us a lot about the human element of the movie: life, death, love, friendship and sacrifice. Star Trek always excels when it tells human stories, even if they take place in the middle of space.
In a secular humanist society, though, completely absent of God, how much can the Star Trek universe tell us about humanity?
Humanity is created in the image of God so we better understand humanity when we seek after our creator. All of the best qualities of humanity: love, honesty, courage and selflessness have their inception in God. We can explore and express those qualities independent of God but not to their fullest. I love how brave and passionate Captain Kirk is, but his bravery and passion are just a dull, fading shadow compared to those of God.
In spite of its atheistic worldview, my excitement for Star Trek Into Darkness is growing with each passing day. I may like God’s courage and passion more, but that’s not going to keep me from seeing Kirk and company’s newest adventure. I just won’t use Star Trek Into Darkness as the sole blueprint for how to be a person.
How excited are you for Star Trek Into Darkness?
