When I first started this blog I was impressed when I didn’t miss a day in the first month. Then I was impressed when I didn’t miss a day in the second month. Now, 24 months in, my consistent posting no longer impresses me.
Instead I am impressed and immensely grateful for those of you who choose to read TheChristianNerd. I’m thankful for those of you who tell your friends about it and share links to my blog. I appreciate those of you who share your thoughts in the comments; I’m encouraged by the fact that I am not the only person who draws connections between their faith and their nerdclinations.
I’m not really a sentimental person but even I have to admit that reaching my 500th post is a bit of a milestone. This blog grew out of my desire to share my thoughts on faith and nerdom. I have thoroughly enjoyed unpacking nerd culture and finding so much of God’s truth beneath the surface. More than anything I hope that God has been glorified and you have found some encouragement in your life with him.
The past two years with TheChristianNerd have been a lot of fun for me and I’m ready to press on into the next 500 posts. Most of that fun has come from interacting with my readers and getting to know some of you from your comments about Star Trek, Superman and obscure role-playing games of which I’ve never heard.
I haven’t had the opportunity to meet any of you in real life but next week that is going to change. One of my very first readers, Wilko, is visiting the United States from Namibia and decided to stop over in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. It blows my mind that God used a silly blog about Star Wars and Jesus to bring two people from opposite sides of the world together. Hopefully Wilko won’t be the last person I get to meet in real life, but I promise I’m thoroughly unimpressive in actual form.
I’m really not that sentimental but I just wanted to take this post to thank all of you who have read, shared and commented. In a moment of hubris, I may have dubbed myself TheChristianNerd, but this site would have been just another abandoned blog if it weren’t for you the readers.
Thank you so much. You are all a blessing and a conduit for God’s goodness.
"Greetings and felicitations" and congrats galore on 500 posts, Scott! I am impressed not only by your consistency (I don't know how you do, it especially while working in parish ministry full-time - I can't even post once a week over at The Sci-Fi Christian, and my "day job" is a 9-5 in the "secular" world!) but also by the connections you draw between something as "frivolous" (so the uninitiated say!) as our "nerdclinations" (love that word - I may "steal" it someday, giving all due credit) and the serious but joyful truth of the Gospel.
God bless you in your ministry and, yes, God bless the blog and blogger, too! Advent and Christmas joy to you and best wishes for 2013...
(Now if we could just get you to like Superman....!)
Thanks, Mike. And thank you so much for your insightful and consistent comments.
Oh, so that's where you're based! I'm in San Diego and am up in the LA area every couple of months. Lets' grab a beer soon 🙂
Hey Scott,
Congratulations! I visited the blog today, hoping to see your 500th post. I still remember your 100th and 300th posts (I think those were the ones) and the excitement behind both. 500 really is a new kind of milestone though!
Thanks for blessing us with your thoughts each week! From all your posts, the following 2 lines were especially dear to me:
Spoiler Alert
Boomer is a cylon.
I still smile when I think of it.
Looking forward to finally meeting you next week Scott!
In real life!!!!
