    #502 – Nerdy Resolutions

    By scotthiga | Uncategorized | 0 comment | 1 January, 2013 | 0

    Happy New Year!!!

Thankfully Jesus was right and no one knows when the world will end, even the Mayans. We made it through the year and stand at the dawn of another, ready with new resolutions and the resolve to make changes in our lives. Those resolutions and changes probably include getting healthier, spending more quality time with God and loved ones or spending less time doing things that really don’t matter that much.

Those resolutions are great but here are some of my nerdier resolutions for 2013.

    Doctor Who

    Doctor-Who-Matt-Smith-600x375

I’ve been slowly working my way through Doctor Who, a little too slowly. While other Whovians are talking about the most recent Christmas special, I’m still wondering what Rose was doing in London at the beginning of season 4. This year I’m resolving to work my way through Doctor Who so I can be caught up by next year’s Christmas special. I really like David Tenant as the Doctor and I’m not sure how I’ll feel about Matt Smith. I had the same reservations about David Tenant, though, after Christopher Eccleston left. I’m sure I’ll come to love Matt Smith as well, just not as much.

I’m sure reading more is a common New Year’s resolution. Last year I read 21 books and only seven of them had any real value. It was fun reading the first six Harry Potter books, but I don’t think that God really showed me anything new about him or myself through J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world. I don’t just want to read more books in 2013 but I want to read more books of value. I love reading and I really do learn a lot from whatever book I am reading. This year I hope I can learn more about following Jesus or being a better husband instead of how to cast spells or how our 16th President was a vampire hunter.

    Video Games

I really want to play more video games. I love playing video games and they are a great way for me to relax and unwind. Unfortunately I feel like 2012 saw my video game hours plummet to an all-time low. I was super excited for Skyrim last year but haven’t even completed the main quest. Alycia and I beat Halo 4 but that was the only game I played through to completion in 2012. I’ve got five or six games that I haven’t really played just waiting to entertain me. My 13-year-old self would be ashamed to know that my 31-year-old self needs to make a resolution just to play video games more.

A New Year is an opportunity to start off on a different path. In all honesty, a random Thursday in August is also an opportunity to start off on a different path. Whether New Year’s Day or Midsummer’s Eve, we should always be looking for ways to better ourselves and become more the people God intended us to be.

And I think God intended me to play more video games in 2013.

What nerdy resolutions are you making for 2013?

    Books, Doctor Who, Video Games

Personally I certainly do hope you come to love Matt Smith. He was the Doctor on whose watch I joined the show as a fan and I think he’s great!

Happy New (and Nerdy) Year to you, Scott!

I’m sure I like Matt Smith and his ridiculous bow tie. Happy New Year to you as well, Mike.

          Bow ties are cool

I like most of your geeky resolutions. The only one I might change is the third. I game a little, but not that much. I think my #3 would be to write more. I would like to get into Dr.Who more, but my first exposure was in the mid-’80’s, and I didn’t like it much, and am afraid that put me off completely. I’d like to be wrong.

I used to watch Doctor Who back in the 80s as well. The new Doctor is really good, though; I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy it.

      A. You’ll love Matt Smith, he’s my Doctor 🙂
      B. Read book seven of Potter. I’ve actually had religious experiences off that boo, particularly my favorite chapter in fiction “The Forest Again”, and God used me to lead someone to Christ through it as well.

        I’m reading it.

I had a severely difficult time convincing myself to start watching Matt Smith. I loved Tenant so much that after his final episode, I took a solid nine month break before watching Matt Smith’s first episode. The transition was not nearly as jarring as I thought it would be. Perhaps the nine month break had something to do with that. Overall, I won’t say that I like Smith more than Tenant until I go back and watch each of their runs again, but Smith certainly holds his own.

If you haven’t read them already, I’d recommend C.S. Lewis for a few books of “value.” While Mere Christianity and Screwtape Letters are of course classics, one underrated work of his is A Grief Observed. It’s quite short, but contains very powerful insights on loss and mourning.

I’ve read part of A Grief Observed; it was very good. Thanks for the suggestion and for understanding my fear of Matt Smith.

First, you need to break off all contact with your ex for about a month.
When she notices these small changes you have made she will
begin to wonder what you are doing different than you
were when the two of you were together, and she may even become consumed with thinking about
you and wondering what you are up to. Instead of trying to contact your ex right now, you should be breaking down those lines of communication.

Hey there! This is my first comment here so I just wanted to give a quick shout out and say
I really enjoy reading your posts. Can you suggest any other
blogs/websites/forums that deal with the same topics? Thank
      you so much!

A home based boutique requires a low cost,
yet effective marketing strategy. Therefore, in such a
situation, if you try to call her or meet her,
she might likely decline all your initiatives, also you are going to appear extremely needy and
desperate to her, thus, pulling her away from you
even more. The harsh reality is that doing something right now would make the
      situation worse, not better.

There are many hairclinic Dubai which offers surgical and medical methods for
hair loss treatment. Many had complained of hair loss when they shower, wash their hair, brush or comb it.

Many women who have untreated PCOS, however, eventually develop Type 2 diabetes.
