I’m not really a big fan of the band fun. I like their songs that I’ve heard on the radio but I haven’t bought the album. The above lyrics are from their song We Are Young. The song is about a boyfriend who had abused his girlfriend in the past, carrying said girlfriend home when she has had too much to drink.
Thankfully that’s not the only definition of what it means to be young.
Last night after our junior high group I hung out with some of our junior high leaders. They ranged in age from 19-21, all young men and women committed to Christ and doing his work in the world. I had so much fun hanging out with all of them. Spending time with them made me feel like I was young. Not young like the fun. song, but young like them, just serving God and building friendships.
I started serving in student ministry right after I graduated from high school. I don’t regret the 13 years I’ve poured into student ministry; they have been the best years of my life. I really don’t regret those early years, when I was 18, 19 and 20. I learned so much about doing ministry and formed great friendships with the people I was serving with. A lot of those friends have become my closest friends and we still talk, hang out and do ministry together today.
It can be discouraging to look at lyrics like those from We Are Young or watch shows like Jersey Shore or Buckwild. The most visible young people in our culture seem to me those making the most poor choices and unwise decisions. Thankfully, though, not every young person models his or her life after Snooki or a Katy Perry song.
Our junior high leaders are all amazing people. They prove that there are young people today who make wise choices and want to make the world a better place. They know Jesus has called and gifted them; they are willing and ready to serve. I’m blessed to be on a team with them and I love seeing God work through them.
They also make me feel young, which I never mind.
