I’m in Las Vegas again. I think I’ve written seven or eight posts while in Vegas, which seems like a lot for a Christian blogger who doesn’t live in Vegas.
I wasn’t planning on coming to Vegas until a few days ago. My family from Hawaii is in Vegas for a few days but I didn’t think I was going to be able to see them. My schedule worked out, though, to where I was able to get away for a night. Unfortunately Alycia couldn’t come but my two best friends were able to join me.
Some adults bristle at the idea of still having best friends. Obviously my wife is my favorite person on the planet and I would rather spend time with her than anyone else. Along with a wonderful wife, though, I still have two best friends.
They were my best men at our wedding.
Like A Tale of Two Cities, they’ve been with me through the best of times and the worst of times.
Each has been my friend for over a decade.
We’ve been on countless road trips together, many of them to Las Vegas.
They are by far my two best friends in the world, lifelong friends that I know will be a part of my life for its entire span. In spite of our friendship, though, neither of them would consider themselves nerds.
They don’t really like Star Wars.
They mock my encyclopedic knowledge of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
I don’t think either of them has seen the Lord of the Rings movies.
In spite of their complete lack of nerdiness, though, we have cultivated deep, committed friendships with each other. I’ve never had a brother but I can’t imagine a real life brother being any better than either of my friends.
Even though they’re not nerds, we have a much stronger connection. All three of us love Jesus and want to see his will accomplished in our lives. Even though they don’t understand how I can spend an hour reading about the X-Men on Wikipedia, that doesn’t matter. Much like the ability to destroy a planet is insignificant compared to the power of the Force, nerdiness and other personality traits are insignificant compared to the power of Jesus.
I have seen the common foundation of Jesus not only bridge gaps between me and my non-nerdy friends, but also between groups of Christians from different parts of the world. Jesus is the steadiest foundation upon which we can build our relationships, a foundation that also makes for lasting relationships.
Other than my wife, there’s no one else I’d rather spend time with than my two best friends. The term BFF gets thrown around a lot but I use it liberally with my two best friends. They are my two best friends and have no doubts they will be forever. Not because any of us are so great but because our friendship is built on someone who is.
What do you do to intentionally build your relationships on Jesus?
hope you had fun in vegas. But not toooo much fun ;). Ahh cmon now what fun would life be if i didnt tease now and then.
