When I first started this blog I didn’t know if there were any other Christian nerds out there. I knew there were Christians who liked Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. However, I didn’t know if there were any who found Jesus in phasers, Dark Phoenix and Hufflepuff. Thankfully, through TheChristianNerd, I’ve found many kindred spirits whose passion for nerdclinations is only superseded by their passion for Jesus.
Growing up I had a lot of nerdy friends and a lot of Christian friends. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a lot of crossover between those two groups. It’s been great to form a community with some likeminded people who know their Bible as well as they know their Star Trek Encyclopedia (which I took with me to 8th grade summer camp).
Up to this point, this community has mostly existed online. I’ve had the opportunity to meet a few people face-to-face but for the most part our Christian nerd community has been built on Twitter, Facebook and webpages.
One member of this community, Kevin, captains The Undiscovered Country Project. His website focuses on the many connections between Christianity and Star Trek. Since Romans 12 tells us to rejoice with those who rejoice, I’m happy to rejoice with Kevin. He recently announced that his book The Gospel According to Star Trek is going to be published. It hasn’t been released yet but, when it does, I’ll be reading it and I encourage you to do the same.
Having a community of friends, whether virtual or real, is tremendous. I would love to publish a book about Star Trek and Jesus. However, instead of being envious of Kevin and his tremendous opportunity, I can rejoice with him. Living in community brings people into our lives to carry our burdens and maximize our joys.
And if those joys have to do with Star Trek and X-Men, then that’s even better.
Thanks for the kind words, sir. Your support of UCP and ‘The Gospel According to Star Trek’ is, as always, much appreciated.
I’m hoping this book will give me the opportunity to meet a lot of the Christian nerds and Jesus geeks I’ve met online, as it’s a great excuse for people to invite me as a speaker! 🙂
It’s been a wonderful blessing to find compatriots like yourself in my journey thus far. I wouldn’t have made it this far without the support I have from my Bridge Crew, fans and friends.
This has helped me to learn that I don’t have to carry all the weight on my own and that there are brilliant and talented people who are willing to help support and even shape my vision. The church in general would be stronger if we relied upon one another more.
Thanks for all you do with The Christian Nerd to engender such support.
Live Long and Prosper, my friend! (John 10:10)
