I love movies and I really love nerdy movies, which means the summer is my favorite time of year. During the summer nerd culture leaves its mother’s basement and heads for the mainstream. The summer movie season is tent poled by nerdy fare and here’s a preview of those nerdy movies coming out in May and June.
Iron Man 3 – May 03, 2013
Earlier this week in The Christian Nerd Facebook group I asked if everyone was getting excited for Tony Stark’s next adventure. I can’t believe Iron Man 3 is coming out this week. It seems like only yesterday Tony was saving New York City with all of the other Avengers. With all the reviews for Iron Man 3 starting to come out this week, I’ve been doing my best to stay spoiler-free. From the trailers things look pretty hairy for Tony but I’m not sure how I feel about a football team’s worth of Iron Man suits. However, I’ve heard that it’s really good and can’t wait to check it out this weekend.

Star Trek Into Darkness – May 17, 2013
I’m most excited for the return of Captain Kirk and the starship Enterprise. Star Trek was my second love after Star Wars. Even after hundreds of hours of television and 11 movies, I still can’t get enough of Gene Roddenberry’s wagon train to the stars. Into Darkness looks like another action-packed adventure that falls in line with J.J. Abrams’s Star Trek. While there is much more to the Star Trek universe than action and explosions, there’s not much else that can be done in two hours. So while I hope Star Trek finds its way home to television again, I’ll still be more than happy to visit the final frontier on the silver screen.

Epic – May 24, 2013
Unless it comes from Pixar I usually don’t watch a lot of digitally animated movies. I don’t have any kids yet so I don’t feel compelled to take in many family-friendly movies. Epic is about small people fighting a small war in the backyard. Perhaps the small villains in the backyard have larger aspirations than controlling everything within the fence, but the plot doesn’t feel very epic to me. Also, the entire time I was watching the trailer, all I could think was that I liked this movie better when it was called Ferngully.

After Earth – May 31, 2013
Fool me once, M. Night Shyamalan, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I really haven’t been fooled too many times by Shyamalan. Of all his movies I have only seen The Sixth Sense and Signs. I never saw The Happening, The Village or The Last Airbender (he should have called it Avatar: The Last Airbender and tricked some people into seeing it who were expecting giant blue cat people). The trailer for After Earth doesn’t really have me that excited but I like Will Smith and Shyamalan is a talented director. Maybe I’ll go see it with my dad and it can be a good bonding experience, even if we end up bonding over how frustrating the movie is.

Man of Steel – June 14, 2013
I haven’t been shy with sharing my feelings about Superman. I think he’s incredibly boring and nothing more than an overgrown boy scout with every power imaginable. Superman isn’t nearly as interesting as Batman or Wolverine and I’d much rather spend time with the X-Men or the Avengers. That being said, I’m actually looking forward to Man of Steel. The trailers have been amazing and everyone involved with the production says that it’s the Superman movie we’ve been waiting for. Superman Returns was incredibly boring and I can’t even remember who the villain was (I checked Wikipedia and it was Lex Luthor and he wanted to make kryptonite Club Med). Hopefully Man of Steel is a lot more exciting even if its main character is as interesting as white bread.

World War Z – June 21, 2013
I really don’t like zombies and I pretty much avoid them like a zombie apocalypse. I’m interested to see if critics like World War Z since I read that it had a lot of problems through its development and production. I probably won’t see the movie but I’d be more likely to read the book upon which the movie is based. In the trailers it looks like Brad Pitt flies around the world attempting to stop a zombie apocalypse. The book was about a journalist recording the stories of those who survived a zombie apocalypse. Either way, zombies are scary and I like sleeping so I’m going to sit this one out.

Even if Star Trek Into Darkness was the only nerdy movie coming out this summer, I would still be extremely excited. The fact that Iron Man, Superman and some walking dead men are in the mix makes it even better. I’ll post reviews of the movies I see and would love to hear your thoughts on them as well.
See you at the movies.
Which of these nerdy movies are you most looking forward to?
Hey you take that back about Superman being boring.
Yeah, 3 of 5 of these are on my want-to-see list, too, although I feel I *must* see Trek and Superman on the big screen. But After Earth looks pretty promising to me. I find Will Smith consistently engaging, even when he’s in less than stellar films; but this one looks like it has much potential. I didn’t even know until I read your post that MNS is directing – Smith is the draw for me.
That may have been the best description of Superman I have ever read. I look forward to the reviews this summer.
That’s a quwti-ikcted answer to a difficult question
