On Saturday I thought that the biggest news coming out of Comic-Con would be DC’s planned Superman and Batman movie. I was totally planning on sharing my thoughts about DC’s two biggest super heroes teaming up on the big screen. I’ll still share my thoughts about Krypton’s last son and the Dark Knight but they’ll have to wait.
Later on Saturday Marvel held its panel in Hall H at Comic-Con. Tom Hiddleston was there as Loki to promote Thor: The Dark World and the entire cast of Captain America: The Winter Soldier was on hand to promote their movie. However, I was most interested in the panels for The Avengers 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron
After seeing The Avengers and Thanos’s grinning face after the credits, I was sure The Avengers 2 would tell the story of the Infinity Gauntlet, one of my favorite comic crossovers. The inclusion of The Guardians of the Galaxy only confirmed my thoughts that Phase Two of Marvel’s cinematic universe would culminate with the Avengers versus Thanos. However, on Saturday, Joss Whedon revealed that the sequel to The Avengers would be titled The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Ultron is a sentient robot created by Hank Pym. Ultron goes crazy and, over the years in the comics, frequently createded newer and stronger versions of himself. I thought I had Phase Two all figured out but, at this point, I’m completely lost. Thanos is too big of a villain to shoehorn into a movie as a secondary villain to Ultron and I don’t think they’d waste him as a villain solely for Guardians of the Galaxy. All I can think is that Thanos is going to be a shadow in the background of Phase Two. Then, all the new heroes introduced in Phases Two and Three, will join the original Avengers in an epic fight against Thanos and his Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers 3.
Guardians of the Galaxy
All of the information for The Avengers: Age of Ultron was really interesting, but I was most excited about the panel for Guardians of the Galaxy. Ever since it was announced, I have been the most excited for Star Lord and his rag tag group of alien misfits. Drew over at HitFix has a great recap of the entire panel and thoughts that are far more insightful than any I could muster.
Suffice it to say, everything that happened at the panel for Guardians of the Galaxy has me even more excited. They’re only 14 days into filming and I already can’t wait to see the first teaser trailer. Even that image above, based on the actors playing the characters, has me wishing tomorrow were August 1, 2014.
I was already going to be in the theater on opening weekend for The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Guardians of the Galaxy. After Comic-Con and Marvel’s panels, though, I’m even more excited than I was. I’ll be happy for Jesus to come back, but if he waits until Phase Two completes, I’d be all right with that.
What Marvel news from Comic-Con has you most excited?
I don’t think thanos would be much of a threat to the Avengers by himself. Unless he had the infinity gauntlet. So maybe they will have him collecting them during the next movies leading into avengers 3.
