Over the weekend at Star Wars Celebration Europe, Kathleen Kennedy, the head of Lucasfilm, announced that Episode VII would follow the original trilogy’s example and use more practical locations and effects. I thought that the prequels relied too heavily on green screen and CGI, so I’m happy to hear that Episode 7 will look more real and more authentic.
Even though I don’t have as much disdain for the prequels as some people, it was easy to see that most of the movies were shot in front of a giant green screen. When something isn’t real or authentic we know, there’s some part of us that can tell something is off. This isn’t just true for green screen and CGI but it’s true for people and relationships as well.
It’s important to find people who are authentic and genuine; we all long to have people like that in our lives. If we want to find authentic and genuine people, though, we have to be authentic and genuine people ourselves. We can’t be green screen people, constantly changing and always trying to show other people what we think they want to see.
Any time we think about our favorite people, the ones to whom we’re drawn, there’s a good chance they are some of the most authentic and genuine people we know.
We want to be around people who speak to us straight.
We want to be around people who aren’t ambiguous in their feelings toward us.
We want to be around people who won’t try to manipulate us for their own agendas.
If those are the people we enjoy being around then that’s really the type of person we should try to be. We may fool people with our green screen, inauthentic lives for a while but, eventually, they’ll figure it out. And instead of sticking around with our fake prequel lives, they’ll go and find someone living a real original trilogy life.
When thinking about how we want to live, we should strive to have Endor lives and not Mustafar lives.
What helps you to be authentic with those around you?
