Thankfully I’ve never been addicted to any sort of drug or substance. Unfortunately I am currently addicted to Candy Crush.
Candy Crush is a puzzle game that can be played on mobile devices and Facebook. One of the biggest lures of Candy Crush is its ability to send and receive extra lives from your Facebook friends. Through Candy Crush I’ve connected with friends that I haven’t seen in years. We haven’t really interacted but, when they ask me for a life, I’m more than happy to give them one.
A lot of my Candy Crush friends are people I haven’t seen for a while. They’re also people who don’t regularly attend church and don’t want that much to do with Jesus. In the real world they may not want to hang out with a youth pastor or the Christian Nerd. In Candy Crush, though, we all have common ground.
We need to find common ground in order to share Jesus with those around us. Standing on a corner and trying to share Jesus with strangers isn’t nearly as effective as building relationships with people and finding common ground.
Shared experiences and shared interests provide a solid foundation, not just for a friendship but also to share Jesus. As we build those friendships we need to seize Spirit-led opportunities to share our faith and what Jesus has done and is doing in our lives.
I don’t think Candy Crush is the best way to start friendships but it couldn’t hurt. Some of my best friendships started because of professional wrestling and that’s way less Godly than an iPhone app.
What helps you build relationships with people who need to know Jesus?
