Whenever our high school students tell me they’re dating someone who doesn’t love Jesus, I always make them look up 2 Corinthians 6:14.
Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?
This is a great verse about marriage and dating but we shouldn’t limit it to romantic relationships.
As I preached in my sermon this past weekend, we should apply 2 Corinthians 6:14 to all of our significant relationships. Whether we’re married or not, we all have people in our lives who give us advice and influence our choices. It’s in those relationships that Paul is encouraging us to be yoked to other believers. Other believers will helps us pursue Christ more wholeheartedly and accomplish the work to which God has called us.
Oxen needed to be on the same page to pull a plow.
Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader needed to be on the same page to hunt down the Jedi.
Kirk and Spock needed to be on the same page to outsmart Khan.
All of the Avengers were at their best when they were on the same page
If we want to see the work of God accomplished around us and within us, we need to have people in our lives who want that as well. We still need to build relationships with unbelievers and wait for Spirit-led opportunities to share Christ. But for the people to whom we’re closest, for the people who influence who we’re becoming, we need to be on the same, Christ-centered page.
It works for Sith and super heroes and it will work for us as well.
