Nerdy entertainment used to be saved for summer blockbusters and niche television channels. However, with the success of shows like The Walking Dead on and Once Upon a Time, even more major networks are getting in on the nerdy TV game.
Here are some of the new nerdy TV shows and why I am or why I’m not watching them (mostly not).
Sleepy Hollow
Sleepy Hollow was the first new show of the season to get renewed for a second season. I haven’t watched a single episode yet, but the likelihood has gone up since we now have Hulu Plus. Matt on the Sci-fi Christian Podcast said that Sleepy Hollow is all kinds of awesome, over-the-top crazy. I might have to boycott the show, though, because they killed the new Sulu in the first episode.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
I’ve watched every episode Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I love Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and getting to experience a small part of it every week. The show has room to improve, which will definitely come as the characters develop their relationships. Nothing beats seeing Agent Coulson again, even if there’s some mystery to how he returned.
Once Upon a Time in Wonderland
Once Upon a Time in Wonderland is a spinoff of Once Upon a Time. Alycia recently started watching Once Upon a Time and, from what I’ve seen, it’s a convoluted mess. I haven’t watched an episode of Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and I can’t imagine I will. I can’t knock ABC, though, for trying to fit as many Disney characters as they can into its Once Upon a Time series. I would love to see Stitch show up and tear Storybrooke up.
Dracula
If there’s something the world needed more of it’s sexy British vampires. At least Jonathan Rhys Meyers is a better actor than Robert Pattison. I can’t imagine any scenario that finds me watching Dracula. I don’t like vampires and I’m not much for melodrama. I get enough drama in my life from working with high school students.
Almost Human
I hadn’t seen anything for Almost Human until this past weekend while watching football. I’m actually interested in watching Almost Human, which premieres on November 4. It stars Karl Urban as a human detective who is partnered with an advanced, crime-solving android. It’s like Doctor McCoy is teaming up with Data to solve space crimes!
To be honest I haven’t watched many of these shows and I’m not planning on watching most of them. I’m pretty timid about committing to new TV shows because so many of my favorite shows have suffered early deaths. Hopefully some of these new nerdy shows will make it and they will lead to more and better nerdy entertainment.
Which of these new nerdy shows have you watched or are you looking forward to?
Re: Sleepy Hollow
Stay with it after the first episode. Just because people are killed doesn’t necessarily mean they stay dead….After all, wasn’t the Horseman supposed to be dead?
Once Upon a Time was clearly conceived for women. I don’t even try to get Solomon to watch it. He still picks things up, just from being in the same apartment, but it’s very clear – not meant for dudes. It’s not even that great of production value or story, it’s just that the concept is pretty appealing to women. I think most of us hoped when we were a little girl that we actually were a long-lost fairy tale character and would some day get to go back and save the day. Haven’t gotten into OUAT in Wonderland yet… Not sure I will, but we’ll see, once Netflix gets its act together.
