I love Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed each of Marvel’s movies up to this point and Thor: The Dark World wasn’t any different. The Dark World is very different from its predecessor. The original Thor was a smaller super hero movie focused on Thor’s individual journey. The Dark World has a much larger scope as it focuses on Thor attempting to save all nine realms.
I really enjoyed Thor: The Dark World and spending more time with the god of thunder. Chris Hemsworth is great as Thor and Tom Hiddleston pretty much steals the movie as Loki. Granted we didn’t learn that much about the evil Dark Elves and their leader Malekith, but I still enjoyed watching Thor and company take them on.
Here are some other thoughts I had while watching Thor: The Dark World.
Potential
I really liked the original Thor and how it really just focused on Thor’s development as an individual. He went from a prideful, petulant boy to a humble, sacrificing hero. After the journey he went through in the first movie, Thor finally meets his full potential in Thor: The Dark World. When we first find Thor in The Dark World he is bringing peace and hope to all the nine realms. Instead of waging war for his own glory, Thor is using his power to defend those in need. We all have untold potential, something for which God has placed us on this planet. If we don’t allow Christ to transform us, much like Thor was transformed in the first movie, we may never meet the potential for which we were created.
Convergence
Early on in Thor: The Dark World we learn about the Convergence, a time at which all nine realms perfectly align. During the Convergence each of the realms sort of spills over into the others, a bit of each world comes into contact with the others. We ask for the same thing every time we say the Lord’s Prayer. We pray:
Your kingdom come, your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
As followers of Jesus, our desire should be to see our world transformed more and more into the likeness of God’s kingdom. Every time we do the work of Christ in the world, we are revealing a little bit of God’s kingdom in the here and now; a little bit of heaven spills into earth. Thankfully we don’t have to wait hundreds of years for the Convergence; we can experience a little heaven on earth every day of our lives.
Humor
Thor: The Dark World is an action-packed, super hero adventure. It is also very, very funny. Director Alan Taylor, best known for his work on Game of Thrones, strikes a tremendous balance between action and humor. Saving the universe is serious business but the humor brings some levity to the proceedings. Thor: The Dark World benefitted from its humor and our lives can do the same. A lot of life is very serious and no laughing matter. Mixed in with those heavier moments, though, we should do our best to find some humor and levity. God doesn’t want us to grit our teeth and push through life miserable. He wants us to find our joy in him and enjoy the lives he’s given us. And having a good laugh every day will go a long way in helping us do that.
I really liked Thor: The Dark World. Along with Iron Man 3, Marvel’s Phase 2 is off to a great start. The Dark World was a fun and exciting comic book movie and a great addition to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. I know there’s only one true God, but I don’t mind spending time with the god of thunder.
What did you think of Thor: The Dark World?
