X-Men: Days of Future Past is still over five months away. However, last week Bryan Singer sent out this tweet:
It has been confirmed by Vulture that X-Men: Apocalypse will be a direct sequel to X-Men: Days of Future Past directed, once again, by Singer. The movie will star the X-Men: First Class cast, focusing on the younger Professor Xavier and Magneto. The movie is also set for its release in 2016, potentially on May 27.
I’m excited for X-Men: Days of Future Past but also worried about all the pieces coming together in a coherent film. Days of Future Past is set to be Fox’s second most expensive movie ever, behind only Avatar. The studio must like what it has seen to have already green-lit a sequel.
Even though I have some small concerns over Days of Future Past, I’m excited that an X-Men movie is finally going to tackle a classic enemy other than Magneto. Ian McKellen is a tremendous actor and he brought a lot of strength, legitimacy and gravitas to Magneto. However, according to the X-Men movie universe, the X-Men really only have one main enemy. I know William Stryker and Sebastian Shaw got some play but, ultimately, in the movies it always comes back to Magneto.
Magneto is great but the X-Men have so many other major adversaries. I’m happy to finally see that another of those major adversaries will make his way into an X-Men movie.
Apocalypse is scary. He’s over 5,000 years old and potentially the world’s first mutant. He has a wide range of powers that have been augmented by advanced alien technology. He also has a bit of the Jean Greys, in that he has died and come back to life many times over. I was always wary of reading comics with Apocalypse when I was younger because I was worried that he would give me nightmares. He is driven by a Darwinian passion of the survival of the fittest. Even at 9 years old, I knew I wasn’t the fittest.
Even after six X-Men/Wolverine movies and now two more on the way, I still haven’t had enough. I’ve been reading X-Men comics on and off for 20 years and I haven’t gotten tired of them yet. My nerd soul will be happy to watch a new X-Men movie every two or three years for the rest of my life. I love that nerd culture has gone mainstream and I’m ready to ride that wave as long as it lasts.
