January and February are known as a bit of a dumping ground for movies. All of the big Oscar contenders come out at the end of the year and all of the blockbusters are saved for summer. That leaves the cupboard a little bare for the year’s first two months. As bare as it might be, here are previews of some nerdy movies coming out over the next two months.
The Legend of Hercules – January 10
Kellen Lutz stars as the demigod Hercules. I only know Kellen Lutz from his appearance on 30 Rock. This looks like a by-the-numbers ancient action movie, akin to the remake of Clash of the Titans. The Legend of Hercules looks like it could be mildly entertaining but also completely forgettable. Also, the Rock has a Hercules movie of his own coming out, which I’m much more likely to see.

Her – January 10
Technically Her came out last year but its wide release is today. I am very excited to see Her. I haven’t liked all of Spike Jonze’s work, but Her looks absolutely incredible. It looks like a sci-fi movie that is more interested in the truth of humanity than the fiction of science. I still have a bit of an art-house heart from my days in the drama department and fare like Her definitely tugs at its strings.

I, Frankenstein – January 24
Even if its trailer and poster weren’t emblazoned with “From the producers of Underworld” I’m pretty sure we would still be able to tell. I, Frankenstein looks exactly like Underworld, just with gargoyles instead of werewolves and humans with axes instead of vampires. Underworld wasn’t terrible and it entertained me. But, if I were going to watch a good-looking hero fight monsters, I’d prefer Kate Beckinsale to Aaron Eckhart.

The Lego Movie – February 07
The Lego Movie looks awesome! The first time I saw the trailer it didn’t have any sound and it still made me want to watch the movie. Now, after watching the trailer with sound, I want to see it even more. I love Chris Pratt and I think he’ll make a great Lego hero. And casting Will Arnett as Batman is a stroke of genius. I LLoL’d (literally laughed out loud) twice during the trailer and foresee many more laughs in the full movie.

Robocob – February 12
The original Robocop was the first rated R movie I ever saw. I was probably eight or nine years old and hanging out at a friend’s house. I wasn’t allowed to watch rated R movies but my parents weren’t around and I gave into peer pressure. I don’t think I’ve watched it since then, but I remember it had a lot of dark humor to go along with its ultra violence. I don’t know if this remake will keep some of Paul Verhoeven’s subversive humor or if it will be just another action movie. It doesn’t look terrible but I also don’t know if I’ll spend the money to see it in the theater. I may just choose to see The Lego Movie for a second time.

There are a lot of movies to look forward to in 2014, unfortunately most of them don’t come out until later this year. At least there are some nerdy movies to tide us over until Captain America: The Winter Soldier, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Which of these nerdy movies are you looking forward to?
