Everything is indeed awesome, especially The Lego Movie.
The first time I saw the trailer for The Lego Movie the sound wasn’t working in the theater. Even without sound it looked totally awesome, which it absolutely is. I loved how they brought all of the different Lego sets together, especially the licensed characters like Batman and Gandalf. The action was great and it was raucously hilarious. I was crying laughing numerous times through the movie.
Here are some other thoughts I had while watching the movie.
Special
More than communicating that everything is awesome, The Lego Movie’s main message is that everyone is special. The main hero of the movie isn’t Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman or a very needy Green Lantern. The real hero is Emmet Brickowoski, just a normal, everyday Lego guy. Emmet has some doubts about his specialness, something with which we can all identify. Thankfully, though, we don’t have to be special on our own. When we come to Christ, the Holy Spirit empowers us so that we can be special for God’s kingdom and his purposes.
Teamwork
According to the song “Everything is Awesome,” everything is cool when you’re part of a team. The Bible definitely agrees with that sentiment as we are called to live in community. Even just looking at this past weekend, I definitely know that everything is cool when we’re part of a team. We were at winter camp this weekend and we couldn’t have done it unless we worked as a team. Four churches came together for camp. If we had all been working independently of each other then nothing good would have happened. Thankfully, even without watching The Lego Movie, we were able to work together and make camp happen.
Fun
“Fun” is the word that best describes The Lego Movie. It never takes itself too seriously and never misses an opportunity to make a great joke. I was smiling the entire movie, giddy to see one of my favorite childhood toys brought to life. There’s a lot of serious business in life: family, friendships, the Great Commission. However, God didn’t create us to walk through life with our teeth clenched. We need to have fun and we need to enjoy our lives. If we never have any fun and never have any joy in our lives, then we’re not being great ambassadors for Jesus. Christians should be the most joyful people on the planet because we’ve found the one true source for real, lasting joy. And that joy should express itself in a little fun more than once in a while.
I loved The Lego Movie and cannot recommend it enough. It was fun, funny and great entertainment for the entire family. And, on top of that, it was a better Batman movie than Batman and Robin.
What did you think about The Lego Movie?
Good review. Fun for the whole family, and that’s about all there is to it. But that’s a perfect attribute of it.
