It’s already the end of February, which is a little hard to believe. We’re two months into the year and The Lego Movie has been the best nerdy movie so far. Perhaps one of these nerdy movies coming out this spring will have a chance to top the awesome adventures of Emmett, Batman and company.
March 07, 2014 – 300: Rise of an Empire
I saw the original 300 on opening weekend almost eight years ago. At that point Gerard Butler hadn’t starred in a bunch of romantic comedies and Zack Snyder hadn’t become the godfather of the DC movie universe. I enjoyed the stylish action of 300, as those kinds of visuals and action sequences hadn’t really been seen before. Now they’re almost standard fare and 300: Rise of an Empire looks like almost every other sword and sandal epic released today. Still, I really did enjoy 300 and 300: Rise of an Empire does intrigue me. I’ve heard that its bad parts are really bad and its good parts are really good. I suppose I’ll have to wait until next weekend to find out.

March 21, 2014 – Divergent
I haven’t read Divergent yet. It looks like just another story about a teenage girl taking down a dystopian government while trying to find her true love. Alycia has read the first book and seemed to enjoy it well enough. I’m sure the books are fine but good books don’t always lead to box office success. For every Twilight and Hunger Games there are three or four Golden Compasses and Mortal Instruments. I can’t imagine Divergent having the same overwhelming success as The Hunger Games. But maybe I’m wrong and Shailene Woodley is set to become the next Jennifer Lawrence.

March 28, 2014 – Noah
If someone asked me if I wanted to see a new Darren Aronofsky movie starring Russell Crowe I would definitely say, “Yes.” I honestly wouldn’t care about the title or the story. I think Darren Aronofsky is a visionary director and Russell Crowe is a tremendous actor. The fact that Aronofsky and Crowe are bringing a biblical epic to the theaters only makes me more excited to see the movie. I’m excited for Noah and to see how the story is told. I’m not expecting it to be a word-for-word retelling of the biblical account, but I’m also not expecting it to completely change the biblical account. Even if it’s not a great movie or remotely true to its source material, God will keep pressing on. It takes more than a bad movie to take God down, as evidenced by the Left Behind movies.

April 04, 2014 – Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Is there anything left to say about Captain America: The Winter Soldier? I am super excited for the next part of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. I loved Captain America: The First Avenger. I am really looking forward to see where they go with Cap and company in his newest adventure. I’ve heard that The Winter Soldier will definitely reshape the Marvel Cinematic Universe, causing ripples that will be felt through the subsequent movies. I can’t wait. I wish it were April 04 today.

April 18, 2014 – Transcendence
I just watched the trailer for Transcendence. It looks like the evil universe version of Her. Instead of falling in love with a computer, in Transcendence it looks like the computer wants to take over the world. It looks interesting enough but I don’t know if I’ll see Transcendence in theaters. I think I’ll much rather see The Winter Soldier for a fourth time.

We only have two months until things really get rolling with all of the summer blockbusters. Until then, though, we have plenty to keep us busy at the theater. And, if all else fails, we can just sit at home and watch Frozen when it comes out on Blu-ray next month.
What nerdy movies are you looking forward to this spring?
