Yesterday Fox released a new trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past. I was already looking forward to the movie but this trailer has me even more excited. Check it out.

After watching that trailer I could only think about how scary those new Sentinels look. I know I’m not a mutant so I don’t need to worry about Sentinels. Even if I had Homo superiors DNA, though, I don’t think I’d be scared of the clunking, rigid, purple Sentinels of my youth. But those sleek, black Sentinels in the trailer make my skin crawl. They don’t look like reject steam punk designs; they look like highly effective killing machines.
In light of the newer, scarier Sentinels, here are some other scary robots.
The Terminator
I haven’t seen any of the Terminator movies all the way through. I remember watching part of The Terminator on TV when I was younger and it freaked me out. I would lie in bed scared that an Austrian robot from the future was coming to kill me. Not only were those fears not founded in reality, they were also a little egotistical. Why would a robot from the future want to come back and kill me? Only because I was going to be the savior of humanity who would end the robots’ rule through my courage and marriage to Jean Grey! My thoughts and fears didn’t make a lot of sense when I was younger. They still don’t, but at least they don’t keep me up at night.
The Borg
I’ve written about the Borg a lot, mostly because the more I write about them the less scared of them I am. When I first saw the Borg in The Next Generation episode “Q Who?” I was transfixed. I wanted to look away because the pale skin and cybernetic implants were already turning into nightmare fodder. But I couldn’t because I was so fascinated by a Star Trek alien that actually looked completely alien. The Borg were a great villain for The Next Generation, as evidenced by the superb “The Best of Both Worlds.” And even though they don’t scare me nearly as much as they used to, I still get a chill up my spine when I see a Borg cube or talk about assimilation strategies in church meetings.
The Cylons
I was never really scared of the toaster Cylons, either in the original or the reimagining. Except for Lucifer, Baltar’s servant: why could we see his brain and why was he smiling? Even though I watched the reimagining as an adult, I was still scared of the human Cylons. I was scared because of their absolute loathing of humanity; they hated us and wanted to see us killed. I know that changed a little bit in the series, but I was still scared of the robots who pretty much blew up everyone.
The new trailer for Days of Future Past is intense and I can’t wait to see the X-Men battle the Sentinels, both the old unscary ones and the new terrifying ones. I’m still not sure how all the pieces and all the mutants are going to fit together, but I’m excited to see them try.
What other robots scared you?
