On Wednesday we had our first event of the summer for our youth group. We combined with another church and had a great night of games, worship through music and a lot of fun.
I gave a little talk to the students about finding different ways to hang out with God. When we think about spending time with God our minds automatically go to reading the Bible, praying, going to church or some other spiritual discipline.
I’m all for spiritual disciplines and praying and reading the Bible. I think those are two of the most foundational disciplines that all Christians should practice. However, we shouldn’t limit hanging out with God to the same old spiritual disciplines.
God created each of us as individuals with desires, passions and interests. We can hang out with God by inviting him to join us in some of our favorite activities.
If we enjoy nature, we can hang out with God as we hike through his creation.
If we are artists, we can hang out with God as we create something.
If we are bookworms, we can hang out with God by reading a classic work of Christian literature.
We all enjoy so many different things, which means there are so many different ways for us to hang out with God.
10 weeks from this past Wednesday most of our students will go back to school. So I told them that they had 70 days to hang out with God. I told them that their lives would be transformed if they looked for some small way to hang out with God each day for the next 70 days. And then I told them to share their experiences with God on social media using the hashtag #70DaysWithGod. Hashtags aren’t magical but I figured it was a small way to encourage others to look for ways to hang out with God.
And we should look for ways to hang out with God because God wants to hang out with us. He loves us, he created us and he wants to hang out with us. He’s just waiting for us to invite him into our day so that we can hang out with him.
How do you like to hang out with God?
