The summer movie season is in full swing. Things kicked off with a bang for me in May but slowed down in June. I haven’t seen a movie since X-Men: Days of Future Past. I still really want to see Edge of Tomorrow and only want to see Transformers so that I can review it.
July and August are looking better, though, if only because Guardians of the Galaxy is finally coming out. Here’s a look at some of the other movies coming out over the next two months.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – July 11, 2014
I just recently watched Rise of the Planet of the Apes for the first time. I really enjoyed the movie, especially Andy Serkis’s performance of Caesar. Rise of the Planet of the Apes really showed both sides of Caesar and I’m hoping that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes manages that same balance. The trailer shows a world devastated by disease and the apes forming a more cohesive society. Eventually these movies will lead up to Charlton Heston’s Planet of the Apes. Until we reach that point, though, it’ll be interesting to see how we get there. These movies also make me want a pet chimpanzee; he could play with my dog and it would be the cutest thing ever.

Hercules – July 25, 2014
I love the Rock; I always have. Wrestlemania 15 is etched in my memory as one of my favorite sports/entertainment events ever. The Rock wrestled Stone Cold Steve Austin for the championship and, even though the Rock lost, I still loved him. The Rock was amazing as a face and a heel; his charisma came across in the ring just as it does on the screen. Even with his charisma, I don’t know if Dwayne Johnson can save Hercules. It looks like a paint-by-the-numbers sword and sandal epic. But hopefully Johnson can push it over the top.

Guardians of the Galaxy – August 01, 2014
I’ve already written quite a bit about Guardians of the Galaxy. Suffice it to say I’m more excited for Guardians than any other movie this year.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – August 08, 2014
I loved the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when I was a little kid. And, according to some of my friends’ little boys, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are still popular. I don’t know how to feel about this movie. I don’t want to be one of those nerds who feels like Hollywood is ruining his childhood every time they remake an 80s or 90s cartoon. That being said, the Ninja Turtles hold a special place in my heart and I don’t want to see that spot tarnished. Still, I do love me some TMNT and if my expectations are low enough, perhaps I can enjoy these updated versions.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For – August 22, 2014
I enjoyed the first Sin City but thought it had more style than substance. Back in 2005 that style carried it a long way. Since then, though, a lot of movies and television shows have embraced that same style. Studios often dump movies they think will underperform in late August. I don’t know if that will happen with Sin City: A Dame to Kill For but I’m pretty sure it won’t get my money.

July is upon us and so is the second half of the summer movie season. I honestly don’t care about any of these movies except for Guardians of the Galaxy. I’d happily watch GOTG every week instead of these other movies.
What nerdy movies are you looking forward to over the rest of the summer?
