I’m back at camp this week.
This week we are at Meadow Ranch, the junior high camp at Hume Lake. As I’ve said many times before, I love summer camp. It really is my favorite week of the year. I love all of the fun, I love hanging out with students and I love seeing God draw young people closer to himself.
Junior high summer camp has a special place in my heart. The first summer camp I went to was as an eighth grader in 1994. I was still fairly in my shell in 1994; I spent most of my week at summer camp sitting in my cabin reading The Star Trek Encyclopedia.
It was also during that camp that I really started thinking about Jesus and what he meant for my life. I grew up in a Christian home but had to choose Jesus for myself. It was at that eighth grade summer camp when I started to take Jesus seriously. A year later I decided that I wanted Jesus to be the center of my life and five months after that I was baptized.
That’s why I’m so excited for this week of summer camp. Junior high students may be super weird and awkward, but they also have tremendously soft hearts. I know that God can and will work in the lives of our students. The seeds that get planted this week could produce amazing fruit one, five and 10 years down the road.
Hume Lake is a little less connected than San Diego so I won’t be able to update my blog from camp. Thankfully I have some great guest writers who will be filling in for me this week. Please check back frequently this week to hear from some other amazing Christian nerds.
What are some of your favorite summer camp memories?
