#918 – Nerdy Shows I Need to Watch

    By scotthiga | Blog | 0 comment | 27 August, 2014 | 0

The Emmys were earlier this week and I realized that I’m pretty out of touch with modern television. I don’t watch Modern Family or The Big Bang Theory and I’m just now watching Breaking Bad.

I’m not opposed to television; I actually really enjoy watching TV. For me to really enjoy a series, though, I have to sit down and give it my full attention. I just don’t have enough time to watch as many shows as I would like. So instead of watching new shows I just watch 30 Rock, The Office and Parks and Recreation over and over again.

If I ever find myself with enough time, though, here are some nerdy shows I’ve never seen that I would like to watch.

    Farscape

    farscape

I watched the pilot episode of Farscape but after that I could never figure out what time it was on. I would catch an episode here and there throughout its run, but ended up pretty confused. From what I can remember the main character is a human transported far across the galaxy. He ends up on a living ship that is piloted by some Muppets. Thankfully Farscape was never popular enough to be ubiquitous so I have no idea what happens. Even if I had learned some spoilers, I probably would have forgotten them by now.

    Fringe

    fringe

Again, I don’t know that much about Fringe other than my sister really likes it. I know that it has something to do with alternate or parallel universes but that’s about it. It also stars Lord Denethor as a protagonist, but I can only ever picture him with tomato juice running down his chin. I just thought about the fact that it also stars Pacey from Dawson’s Creek. I only ever watched the first few episodes of Dawson’s Creek but I still call Pacey “Pacey.” Even with Denethor’s chin and Pacey being Pacey, I still want to watch Fringe. It seems suitably weird and my sister doesn’t really lead me wrong when it comes to television shows.

    Lost

    lost-header

I was pretty (pardon the pun) lost when the Internet nerd-raged against the Lost finale. I’d never seen an episode of Damon Lindelof’s time-warping version of Castaway and didn’t know why everyone was so mad. Like many shows before it, Lost’s finale couldn’t live up to everything that came before it. Most finales have a hard time living up to expectations. It’s difficult for any show to meet six or seven years’ worth of expectations in a single episode. Meeting those expectations is especially difficult in a show like Lost, whose premise is based off of mysteries and plot twists. Knowing that so many people were disappointed in the Lost finale enables me to temper my expectations. Sometimes waiting five years to watch a show pays off.

If the new heaven and the new earth have Netflix, then I might finally catch up on all of the shows I want to watch. If there is no Netflix in heaven, then I guess I’ll just have to get by with praising God and basking in his glory. Either way, things are going to work out.

What are some other nerdy shows I should put on my list?

    Television

Farscape is excellent, and well worth your time. I never got into it when it was on the air, but I purchased the DVD set a year or more ago. If you can get through a few slow spots in the first season, it takes off at the end of season two for one of a ride!

Plus, after season one, Scorpius is one of my favorite bad guys! 😉

My list of greatest shows are as follows: Doctor Who for scifi (which you already watch); Sherlock for action-drama (such an amazing show! AHHH!); and Chuck for comedy/action/romance/everysinglegenre!!. Chuck is seriously really good, and it is now all on Netflix. It has such a perfect blend of comedy, drama, and action. I actually cried during the ending-It is very-much worth your time!

I almost put Chuck on my list. My roommates used to watch it and it looked very entertaining.
