Warner Bros. and DC are really getting their mojo going.
Arrow is one of television’s most popular shows.
Gotham is one of the most anticipated new series of the fall.
The Rock will star as Black Adam in a Shazam movie.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is set to be one of the biggest super hero crossovers ever.
And just last week rumors surfaced that DC is developing a Teen Titans television series for TNT.
I don’t know much about the Teen Titans. According to the rumors, this version of the Titans will center on Nightwing, Batman’s former protégé. This news didn’t really move the needle for me because I don’t really care about the Teen Titans.
I do wonder about Warner Bros. and DC’s strategy. They’ve found success with Arrow and apparently want to reproduce that success. Without creating a connected universe, though, I don’t know if that success will continue. Marvel has found most of its success because of its interconnected universe, both among all of the movies and television series.
I don’t know much about the Teen Titans, but I do know a lot about these biblical teen titans.
David
David may not have been as titanic as his opponent, Goliath, but he is still a titan in the Bible. David was a man after God’s own heart. His example shows us how to pursue God in the midst of every situation. God chose David and, even when David chose to walk away from God, David would always return to God. He may have started as a young, ruddy teenager, but his life is titanic. He modeled an intimate relationship with God, a model that we can still look to today.
Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego
The Teen Titans may be a team of super heroes, but they still stand in the shadows of Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Daniel and his friends were just teenagers when they were taken from their home. Carried off into exile, it would have been easy for Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego to abandon God for feeling like he had abandoned them. Instead of turning their backs on Yahweh, though, they turned deeper into God. Their faith was steeled in the metaphorical and literal fires of Babylon. In a culture that often pulls us away from God, it’s encouraging to look at the titanic example set my Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.
Mary
Mary is one of the most titanic biblical teenagers. I wasn’t nearly as mature as Mary when I was her age. I don’t even know if I’m as mature as Mary at 32. Her willingness to abandon herself to God’s will is humbling. God came to Mary with news that would forever alter the course of her life. Instead of complaining or negotiating with God, she simply said that she was his servant. I don’t often want to emulate the behavior of teenage girls, but for a teen titan like Mary, I’ll make an exception.
I’m pretty biased against DC. I couldn’t care less about most of DC’s series, but I love Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and I can’t wait for Daredevil and the other Defenders series. I may not care about the Teen Titans, but I do care about teens very much. I love walking alongside them, teaching them and learning from their example.
What other biblical teenagers stand tall?
