With so many comic book movies and television shows in the works, it’s rare that a day goes by without some nugget of news. Yesterday news broke for three Marvel related properties.
Doctor Strange
Marvel finally confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast as Stephen Strange for its Doctor Strange movie. Doctor Strange has been on the docket ever since he was mentioned in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I’ve loved Cumberbatch in all of his roles that I’ve seen, especially his turn as Sherlock Holmes and as a relatively kind slave owner in 12 Years a Slave. Like Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange will enter a different area of the Marvel universe. Up to this point the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t touched any magical and mystical elements, but Doctor Strange will definitely change that.
Jessica Jones
After testing a few different actresses Marvel also announced that Krysten Ritter has been cast as Jessica Jones for the upcoming Netflix series of the same name. I only know Ritter from her role on Breaking Bad and from her canceled sitcom Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23, which I never actually watched. Ritter seems to play characters with a sarcastic and caustic edge to them, traits I don’t really associate with Jessica Jones. Ritter is a fine actress, though, and I’m sure she’ll be able to capture the strength and compassion of Jones. Hopefully she’ll also have some chemistry with whomever Marvel casts as Luke Cage.
Deadpool
I own X-Men Origins: Wolverine but I’ve never watched it. I’m hoping that if I put it off long enough that I won’t care how terrible it is. Even though I’ve never seen the movie, I have heard how they completely screwed up Deadpool. In an effort to rectify its mistakes, Fox is giving Deadpool another go at starring in his own movie. Ryan Reynolds is returning as the Merc with a Mouth, which he confirmed on his Twitter. I like Deadpool but I don’t love him like a lot of other nerds. I would be happy to see a good Deadpool movie, though, especially if they can capture his manic insanity.
Jessica Jones will probably premiere on Netflix some time in 2015. Deadpool will be up after that as it is scheduled for February 12, 2016. Doctor Strange will round out this trio with a release on November 4, 2016.
Of these three announcements, to which are you most looking forward?
Cumberbatch, natch. 🙂
