Our church is starting a new church-wide study this week. For the study Alycia and I have joined a small group. I’m excited to see what God teaches us through the group and I’m also looking forward to connecting with others. Small groups are a great way to build relationships with others while simultaneously deepening our relationships with God.
Even though these nerdy small groups may not have directed their members to God, I still wouldn’t mind joining them.
Guardians of the Galaxy
I loved Guardians of the Galaxy. I watched it again after getting it on Blu-ray and it was still as much fun as it was in the theater. I loved the relationships among all the Guardians, seeing how they grew to genuinely care for each other. Joining their small group would definitely come with some growing pains: matching Star-Lord’s sarcasm with my own and learning how to best communicate with Drax. All of the effort would be worth it, though, to have a friend who would pet my head like Drax pet Rocket’s.
Bad-Anon
Wreck-It Ralph was another great movie. My favorite scene was when Ralph gathered with all of the other video game villains. I literally laughed out loud when Zangief said “you are bad guy, but this does not mean you’re bad guy.” I want to be a hero but sometimes I think I have more in common with the villains. Hanging out with the likes of M. Bison, Dr. Robotnik and Clyde, the orange ghost from Pac-Man, might make me feel better about my villainous tendencies.
Kirk, Spock and McCoy
I had two best men at my wedding. They have been my friends for well over a decade and we have lived a lot of life together. We haven’t soared through the stars or traveled through time, but we have eaten a lot of Krispy Kremes together and spent many nights in Vegas. I feel like Kirk, Spock and McCoy have a similar friendship, forged over years. I think I would enjoy sipping on some Romulan ale with them or setting up my tent in Yosemite next to theirs. Hopefully we’d have enough to talk about since they don’t believe in God and I don’t believe in Vulcans.
I’ve always enjoyed being in a small group and I’m looking forward to our new group. God created us to be in relationship with him and with others; a small group addresses both of those needs at once.
What nerdy small group would you want to join?
The Fellowship of the Ring! Before it broke up, of course. With Gimli’s axe and Legolas’ bow and Aragorn’s general all-around kick-buttery (buttery?) at my back, not to mention an honest-to-Iluvatar Wizard in Gandalf (preferably Grey – he’s more fun than The White), that’d be one heck of a small group!
The command crew of the Babylon 5 station: Capt. John Sheridan, Cmdr. Susan Ivanova, Ranger Marcus, and Chief Garibaldi !
I remember watching Babylon 5 when it first premiered. I missed a season and then everything seemingly got crazy and unrecognizable. Maybe I’ll go back to it one of these days if it’s on Netflix or Amazon Prime.
Ooh, no, you stopped just as it really gets good!
