Last week I wrote about J.J. Abrams reportedly in line to direct Episode IX, a movie that won’t come out for at least four years. Faithful reader and commenter Mike shared that any news about Episode IX is premature, especially since The Force Awakens is still almost nine months away.
Apparently Disney isn’t only premature with Star Wars but also with Marvel.
Different rumors/spoilers surfaced this week about some of Marvel’s upcoming movies. I could understand spoilers about Age of Ultron or Ant-Man, which both come out this year. However, this week’s rumors/spoilers have to do with movies that don’t come out until 2018 and 2019.
News broke that Anthony and Joseph Russo would be direct Avengers: Infinity War. Their involvement had long been rumored since Joss Whedon is going to step down from directing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The Russos did an amazing job with The Winter Soldier and I’m excited that they’ll be in the director’s chair for Infinity War.
However, along with that news were rumors about which Avengers would team up for Infinity War. I’ve seen that story all over the Internet and have thankfully been able to avoid it. I don’t want to know who will be taking on Thanos before I see the Avengers take on Ultron.
Rumors also surfaced about Captain Marvel. Apparently Carol Danvers has been cast and she might show up sooner rather than later. Captain Marvel is one of my favorite super heroes and I am so excited to see her join the MCU. However, her movie is three years away; I don’t need to know what’s going to happen in three years before I know what happens this year.
All of these rumors and spoilers are a function of the world in which we live. With so many different websites desperate for page views, rumors and spoilers drive immense amounts of traffic. People are intrigued by even the smallest rumor, regardless of its veracity, which leads to stories about movies that are years away.
We have such a hard time living in the moment. We’re either too focused on the past, so much so that it keeps us from moving forward. Or we’re so focused on the future that we miss out on what God is doing right here and right now.
We need to find a balance in our lives, one which enables us to be excited about what’s on the horizon without sacrificing the here and now. In Isaiah God tells us that he is interested in doing something new in our lives. We’ll only see that new thing accomplished, though, if we do the necessary work in the present. We can’t just focus on the future that God has in store; we need to take the necessary steps to make that future a reality.
There’s enough in our nerdy world to get excited about without looking to movies that won’t come out for three or four years. For example, Darth Vader #3 comes out today and I still have four episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to watch. Not to mention Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, The Spectacular Spider-Man and Thor: Ragnarok all come out before Infinity War and Captain Marvel.
What helps you live in the moment instead of getting lost in the future?
