I’m not the biggest Disney fan in the world. It’s not that I don’t like Disney, it’s just that there are plenty of people who are far more committed to the Mouse House than I could ever be.
My excitement is growing, though, because this year’s D23 will feature Captain America: Civil War and The Force Awakens. Instead of showing all of its cards at Comic-Con, Disney wanted to draw more attention to its own convention. It was an effective tactic because I am far more excited for D23 than I have ever been before. In fact, this is the first time I’ve been excited for D23 much less even known that it was coming.
Here are some other times I got really excited for something Disney related.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
I loved Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest; it’s probably my favorite Pirates movie. I was so excited for the movie that I rented a legit pirate costume for a pirate party. I donned my bloomers and feathered hat and made my way to the theater for a midnight screening. As convoluted as it was, Dead Man’s Chest was a great summer blockbuster and Davey Jones was an exceptional foil for Jack Sparrow. I haven’t been as excited for the two most recent Pirates movies, but maybe I can drum up some passion for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Space Mountain
I grew up in southern California so I have been going to Disneyland my entire life. I haven’t been recently since I’d need hundreds of bars of gold-pressed latinum to afford a single ticket. I did have an annual pass at two points in my life, though, and during that time Space Mountain got a facelift. Space Mountain had been closed for a while but, when it reopened, it was new and improved. I couldn’t wait to make my way down to Anaheim to ride the new and improved Space Mountain. I absolutely loved it and I’m glad that I got plenty of rides in, because unless I win the lottery I don’t see many Disneyland trips in my future.
Dole Whip
Even though I can’t afford it, I do love Disneyland. Disneyland is so much more than the rides; it’s the totality of the experience. One of my favorite parts of the experience was always getting a Dole Whip. Dole Whip is pineapple soft-serve and I was always excited for it. Even though it cost too much money and was always hollow on the inside like a chocolate Easter bunny, I still couldn’t wait to get it every time I went to the Happiest Place on Earth. With all of its parks and intellectual properties, Disney really does sell an experience. And as long as that experience included pineapple ice cream, I was more than happy to pay for it.
I have no problems with Disney. In fact, I was really excited when Disney bought Lucasfilm. I have loved the Marvel Cinematic Universe and I absolutely cannot wait for The Force Awakens. Hopefully D23 will give us more information and more footage about Disney’s upcoming projects.
