I’ve had some pretty embarrassing moments in my life.
When I was in the second grade I smashed a fly on the desk of the girl I liked.
In the sixth grade I loudly passed gas while doing some sit-ups in the P.E. class.
As a sophomore I accidentally dropped the f-bomb on stage during a skit at youth group.
These were all fairly embarrassing because they took place in front of a large group of people. I was mortified going home on the bus that day in the sixth grade, wondering if I’d always be known as the kid who farted in P.E. class.
I had another embarrassing moment this week, but no one was around to see it. Unfortunately, I’m about to share that moment with anyone who can access the Internet.
On Monday morning I hopped on my smart scale, but my smart scale wasn’t smart enough. I had gained so much weight since I had last weighed myself that it thought that I was a guest, an entirely different person.
That’s way worse than smashing a fly on Michelle’s desk in Mrs. Salsgiver’s class.
Fitness is a struggle in my life and has been for a while. I know you’ll be shocked to hear it, but I didn’t play a lot outside when I was a little kid. Instead I spent time sitting inside with my friends playing video games and reading comic books. I hated P.E. and not just because of what happened in the sixth grade. And I’d rather eat hamburgers and pizza than kale and quinoa.
Even though I have an aversion to it, I recognize the importance of fitness and being healthier. So this week I’ve been trying to work out more regularly and eat better. I’ve only had one hot dog so far this week and no French fries. (But I am going to two Dodgers games this weekend so that hot dog number is bound to go up).
There are plenty of reasons to live a healthier lifestyle. I want to be around as long as possible for my family. I don’t want to miss out on playing with my kids because running around with them gets me winded. I don’t want to end up as a faceless fat guy on some news channel’s B-roll footage for a story about type-2 diabetes.
It’s difficult to lose weight and be healthier but it’s not that complicated: eat less and do more. I use My Fitness Pal to help me eat better and I’ve got a FitBit to help me do more. Those tools are only useful, though, if I actually use them.
I want to make use of those tools because I’m a steward of the body God has given me. I’ve only got this one body and I want to make it last as long as possible so I can serve God as long as I can. My grandpa is 94 and still making a difference for God’s kingdom. I would love to be in that same place in 60 years, which means I have to put down the hot dogs and hit the treadmill.
