I don’t see as many movies as I used to. I still love seeing movies in the theater, but I just haven’t had as much time recently. In fact, over the summer, I don’t think I saw more than two movies. Since then the only movie I’ve seen in the theater was The Peanuts, which was absolutely adorable. I’ll definitely see The Force Awakens in the theater multiple times, but my next few trips to the theater might be limited to a galaxy far, far away.
Maybe I haven’t seen that many movies lately because I’ve been so busy. It’s also entirely possible, though, that there just haven’t been a lot of compelling reasons to go to the theater. Two trailers that debuted this week evidence this reality.
I watch a lot of movie trailers and most of them don’t really leave that much of an impression. However, the two trailers below left me confused and looking a little bit like the mouth open emoji. I understand that a lot of bad movies get made, but these two trailers are pushing the limits of that understanding.
Gods of Egypt
Last time I checked Egypt was in Africa, yet none of the actors in this trailer look remotely African. I loved the Lord of the Rings movies, but they have led to a glut of fantasy epics since 2001. Growing up I remember some fantasy movies like Legend and Willow, but they seemed few and far between. Now it seems like there’s a new fantasy epic every month with every studio hoping to find the next Harry Potter. While Gods of Egypt looks like it might be the guiltiest of pleasures, I don’t really see a big future in Anglo-Egyptian gods fighting each other.
The Huntsman: Winter’s War
The Huntsman: Winter’s War is now officially part of a series. While it didn’t move the needle as much as The Fellowship of the Ring, at least Snow White and the Huntsman got a sequel. I actually saw Snow White and the Huntsman in the theater and reviewed it. In my review I wrote that the movie would have been better if it were called The Huntsman since Kristen Stewart was easily the worst part of the movie. Apparently I’ve gotten my wish as Chris Hemsworth takes center stage along with some impressive female costars. I figure that Hemsworth and Charlize Theron were contractually obligated to come back, but I’m impressed with the casting of Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain. Perhaps Blunt or Chastain will turn some heads and one of them will get cast as Captain Marvel.
I don’t think it’s very likely that I’m going to see either of these movies. If I somehow get an abundance of free time I’ll probably read comics and play Battlefront. If I get even more free time than that, then I might go see Gods of Egypt or The Huntsman: Winter’s War.
Will you see either of these movies?
