I got my Xbox One a little over a year ago. However, I probably played my Xbox more this past weekend than I have in the entire year previous. It’s not that I magically got more time or finally hooked up my Xbox. Nope, the biggest difference is that I finally got a killer app that I couldn’t stop playing.
So far Star Wars: Battlefront is everything that I wanted it to be. I haven’t even played any of the missions yet because I’ve been so addicted to multiplayer. I love the attention to detail, I love all of the classic Star Wars music and I love taking part in a galaxy far, far away. I haven’t played video games for hours on end in a long time, but I was more than happy to do so this past weekend.
Here are some of the reasons why I’m enjoying Battlefront so much.
Ship Battles
My favorite part of the game is probably the ship battles. Flying around as a TIE fighter or an A-wing is so much fun, probably the most fun I’ve had playing a video game in a really long time. I haven’t figured out yet how to get unassisted kills, but it’s still awesome to destroy another ship even if I need a little help. The ship battles aren’t nearly as deep as on an actual flight simulator like TIE Fighter, but they still make me feel like a member of Rogue Squadron. I know it’s fun flying a ship when I move my body like I’m actually in the cockpit.
Progress
The addictive nature of Battlefront comes from leveling up. I’ve never been very good at first person shooters. Even during my best run on Call of Duty, I always had more deaths than kills. The same is true for Battlefront; if I have half as many kills as deaths then I feel like I had a good round. But every game I play, regardless of how well I do, I get closer to the next level. And the higher I go the better weapons I get, so I just want to keep moving forward even if the path is stained with my own digital blood.
Conflict
“There is no conflict.”
I couldn’t agree less with Darth Vader. I definitely feel conflicted while playing Star Wars: Battlefront. The Empire is evil; it oppresses innocent people and casually destroys entire planets. However whenever I’m playing as a stormtrooper or flying a TIE fighter, all I want to do is crush the Rebellion. I know that the Rebels are the good guys and they’re bringing justice to the galaxy, but I love seeing them fall before my E-11 blaster rifle.
Battlefront is an amazingly fun game. I spend my days thinking about playing it when I get home, even if it means getting less sleep. Battlefront proves that a system is just a system; it’s the games that give a system its value. Battlefront has greatly increased the value of my Xbox One.
