On Saturday night I had multiple dreams that I was watching The Force Awakens. I shared that on Twitter and a friend asked if I was obsessed. I don’t think I’m nearly as obsessed as I could be. I haven’t watched any trailers since the second one that debuted on October 20. There have been something like 15 new television commercials in that time and I haven’t watched a single one of those. I haven’t scoured the Internet for every last detail, obsessing over The Force Awakens like Sherlock trying to solve a case.
So I suppose I could be more obsessed if I was trying to glean as much information as possible. However, I think it’s my passion for Star Wars that has kept me from wanting to know too much. The original trilogy was a ubiquitous part of my childhood, so much so that I can’t remember the moment when I first learned that Darth Vader was Luke’s father. There weren’t really any surprises with the original trilogy either; it’s not like I didn’t know that Senator Palpatine was going to become the Emperor.
So The Force Awakens is really providing the first opportunity to be surprised by something in the Star Wars universe. I’ve never sat in a theater without knowing where a Star Wars story was going to end up. And since I love Star Wars so much, I can’t wait to have the same experience that so many had when they saw The Empire Strikes Back for the first time in 1980.
I don’t know where Rae comes from.
I don’t know how Finn ends up hanging out with Han and Chewie.
I don’t know where Luke Skywalker is.
I am obsessed with Star Wars, so much so that I want to be surprised. I don’t want to know every detail before I sit in the theater next Thursday night. Star Wars is different from every other nerdclination because it is my first nerd love. I love Star Trek and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but I don’t hold on to them as tightly as I do Star Wars and I don’t avoid their spoilers as fervently.
I am obsessed with Star Wars in general and with The Force Awakens in particular. After Revenge of the Sith I didn’t know if that obsession would ever have new life breathed into it again. Thankfully the saga will continue and, in nine days, I can have an entirely new and fresh experience in a galaxy far, far away.
How do you measure your obsession with Star Wars?
