I used to see a lot of movies during the summer. I love seeing movies, especially on opening weekend. However, my movie habits have changed with the birth of Clara. Alycia was nice enough to let me see Civil War, but I don’t think I’ll have many other opportunities this summer. Just because I can’t make it to the theater, though, doesn’t mean you can’t.
Check out these nerdy movies coming out in May and June.
Captain America: Civil War – May 06, 2013
This preview is a little late so you’ve probably already seen it. I wrote a spoiler-free review this week and we had a spoiler-filled discussion on this week’s episode of the podcast. If you haven’t seen Civil War yet, finish reading this post and then go to the theater, even if you’re at work or school.
X-Men: Apocalypse – May 27, 2016
The X-Men have always been my favorite super heroes. Whenever I read comics, I always go back to the X-Men; they’re my first comic love. The X-Men movie franchise has run the gamut from great to terrible, with most entries falling somewhere in between. I enjoyed Days of Future Past and want to see Apocalypse, even if most of the reviews make it sound like somewhat of a retread.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows – June 03, 2016
I didn’t see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from 2014. I grew up loving the Ninja Turtles, but wasn’t entirely sure about this latest iteration. However, for some reason, the trailers for Out of Shadows really make me want to see this movie. It’s the inclusion of Casey Jones that really has me excited; I loved him in the cartoon and I loved him in the original movie.
Warcraft – June 10, 2016
There was a few week span when I played a lot of Warcraft 3. I never played World of Warcraft, but I enjoyed my time with the original real-time strategy game. In fact, we even connected all the computers in high school during yearbook class and played massive games of Warcraft 2. Warcraft looks like another fantasy epic; hopefully it has more in common with LOTR than The Huntsman: Winter’s War.
Independence Day: Resurgence – June 24, 2016
I can’t separate my nostalgia from Independence Day. I was 14 when Independence Day came out, the summer after my freshman year in high school. I loved high school and had so much fun during the summer. Independence Day may not be a great movie, but it is entertaining and reminds me of a time when the only appointment on my schedule was waking up in time to watch the Cubs game at 11:20. I don’t know if Independence Day: Resurgence can capitalize on those nostalgic feelings, but I’m sure 20th Century Fox hopes it can.
I already got to see Captain America: Civil War; that might be enough to get me through the summer. Besides, I’ve got an adorable little girl at home and I’ll be just as happy watching Star Wars with her.
