People weren’t huge fans of the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond. The Internet responded very differently, though, to the most recent trailer. Other than the music the trailers seemed fairly similar to me. Star Trek Beyond’s producers were smart to hold back their marketing push until Civil War’s tidal wave subsided. Three weeks ago I wasn’t thinking about the final frontier, but now that Cap and Tony have laid down their arms I’m ready to look to the stars.
Check out the new trailer for Star Trek Beyond below.
That’s a solid trailer that gives us pieces of the movie, but doesn’t really show us how they fit together. We don’t know anything about the alien aggressors or whether any of their aggression makes its way to Sector 001. Star Trek Beyond may be another movie I hope Alycia lets me see.
Here are some screen caps and thoughts on the trailer.
- Looks like Starfleet got a uniform upgrade. Not as great as the uniform upgrade between seasons two and three of The Next Generation, but still not bad.
- Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto do a fine job capturing the essence of their characters. However, Karl Urban is absolutely spot-on in his portrayal of Bones. His accent, mannerisms and attitude conjure up images of Deforest Kelley at his most cantankerous. Kirk and Spock were ripe for impersonations, but Pine and Quinto went another, better direction. Urban’s choice to mimic a lot of Kelley’s original performance has paid off.
- Warp speed has never looked so good. We finally get to see what the navigational deflector does, other than act as an ever-present deus ex machina.
- #squadgoals
- The Enterprise is a majestic vessel as recognizable as some of humanity’s most priceless works of art. That majesty, however, is lost through a fisheye lens. Hopefully this isn’t Justin Lin’s lens flare.
- Speaking of Mr. Lin, some people on the Internet are not happy about Paramount’s choice to fill the seat vacated by J.J. Abrams. I’m fine with Lin as a director, as long as Vin Diesel doesn’t show up. I only ever want to hear Diesel’s voice saying some combination of the words “I,” “we,” “am,” “are,” and “Groot.”
- Another Star Trek movie, another opportunity for the Enterprise to get destroyed. How has no one defeated Starfleet if its flagship falls apart at the first sign of space dust?
- I could probably find out who these aliens are, but to be honest I’m trying to write this and deal with a fussy baby. Suffice it to say, I like their armor and how they look like the villain from any sci-fi first person shooter ever.
- I like the design of this planet. It feels very alien and reminds me of the planet from Captain EO.
- I did look up Jaylah’s name because she seems to play a prominent role in the movie. She seems to know more about what’s going on than anyone on the Enterprise and has taken on the role of hand-to-hand bad a** from Worf.
- Idris Elba is an amazing actor. He was stunning as Stringer Bell, showed off his comedic chops on The Office and is now threatening the final frontier. He should be the next James Bond after destroying the Enterprise.
- Is this Earth? If so, Starfleet needs to get some better defenses. What it’s got going right now isn’t working.
- It looks like Kirk has a secret admirer.
- Apparently the escape pods really didn’t provide that much of an escape. Like going on a free vacation but having to sit through a timeshare presentation.
- Beyond Fast and Furious.
- Is that an NX-Class starship?!?!
Star Trek has always been my second nerdy love after Lucas’s space opera. While Star Trek is at its best on the small screen, I won’t turn down an opportunity to boldly go to my local theater.
