On my old blog I wrote a post about The Bachelor that upset a lot of people. The Bachelor that season was Jake and his final choice came down between the bad girl Vienna and the wholesome Tenley. A lot of my friends were upset when Jake chose Vienna, partially because they appreciated Tenley’s Christian values. Last time I checked, biblical love doesn’t have anything to do with making out on camera.
Well I’d better go back and read that post again because I got sucked into watching The Bachelorette. My favorite radio show, Petros and Money, does a recap of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette every week during their respective seasons. I have listened to every recap for as long as Petros has been doing them, but have never been drawn into actually watching the show.
Until last night.
On Tuesday’s show, Money admitted that he had actually watched Monday night’s episode of The Bachelorette. He said that it was good and he couldn’t turn it off. So before Petros started The Bachelorette Report I turned off the radio so that I could watch the episode before listening to the report.
As embarrassed as I am to admit it, I was fairly entertained. The producers have given us a villain in Chad, the violent, steroid-fueled aggressor in the house. They’ve also given us another standout in Evan, the former youth pastor and father of three. All the other dudes sort of get lost in the shuffle; hey, there’s another dude who looks good with his shirt off.
In my post about The Bachelor I came to the conclusion that there’s nothing wrong with watching it or The Bachelorette. Entertainment should be entertainment and that’s fine. Other than embarrassment, I haven’t invested any emotions in who Jojo chooses to marry. Chad’s a bag, but if he weren’t on the show it wouldn’t be nearly as entertaining. And if Jojo ends up giving him the final rose, I’ll still be fine because it’s just a show and they won’t get married anyway.
Unfortunately there was an episode on Monday night and an episode last night, so I spent my entire Tuesday night watching The Bachelorette. In fact, right now I’m watching Luke tell Jojo about his experiences leading a platoon in Afghanistan. If I were going to invest emotionally in someone, it would probably be with a veteran and not the male model.
Petros and Money have brought me so much joy over the years, but The Bachelorette is really balancing that ledger.
(Now Luke and Jojo are standing on a stage in a theater with a bunch of people watching them while some nondescript country band plays. Who are these people? Who would give up their time to drive someone to watch this? I suppose I could ask the same question of myself.)
I have to go do some soul searching.
