Last week I was graciously given the opportunity to appear as a guest on The Nerd of God.cast. The Nerd of God.cast is a podcast which describes itself as the part of the Venn diagram where Christ culture and nerd culture find sweet, sweet two-player co-op. Their show started a few months after I launched The Christian Nerd Podcast and I have been a faithful listener for most of that time. Their crew is headed by Tony Talavera, a youth pastor in Florida. Generally I don’t think I like most things that come out of Florida, but I love The Nerd of God.cast.
The theme of the episode on which I was a guest was crossovers. So in honor of The Nerd of God.cast and their fine show, here are some of my favorite nerdy crossovers.
Marvel Cinematic Universe
I am unashamed in my love for the Marvel Cinematic Universe; in my eyes it can do no wrong. I readily admit that some movies are better than others, but I even enjoy movies like Thor: The Dark World and The Incredible Hulk. I still can’t believe we live in a world that has seen Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Widow appear together in not just one movie, but multiple movies. While adding new heroes requires more of the same origin stories, it does help keep the series fresh. I’m already excited for Avengers: Infinity War and a potential appearance by the Sorcerer Supreme in Thor: Ragnarok. Not to mention the upcoming Defenders crossover on Netflix. What a time to be a nerd.
The Original Series and The Next Generation
I didn’t watch a lot of The Original Series growing up. My introduction to Star Trek came through The Next Generation. Every day at 7:00pm I would be on my couch watching reruns of Picard and his crew’s adventures. I started familiarizing myself with the original crew through the movies, especially The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country. As I faithfully watched all seven seasons of The Next Generation a few members of the original crew crossed over into the 24th century. DeForest Kelley reprised his role as Dr. McCoy for TNG’s premiere episode, Leonard Numoy made a special appearance as Ambassador Spock for the two-part episode “Reunification,” James Doohan showed up as Scotty in one of my favorite episodes “Relics,” and of course William Shatner finally crossed over in Star Trek: Generations.
Wes Anderson Movies
I mentioned the movies of Wes Anderson on The Nerd of God.cast. Wes Anderson is probably my favorite director and while not necessarily nerdy, I definitely obsess over his works. While none of his characters have crossed over into other movies, Anderson definitely uses a lot of the same actors. Bill Murray is my favorite of Anderson’s regulars. His turn as Herman Blume in Rushmore is one of the greatest performances ever captured on film. I’ve grown to love Steve Zissou and was always a fan of Murray’s voiceover work as Badger in Fantastic Mr. Fox. Anderson is a talented filmmaker with a style that is all his own. I get just as excited for a new Anderson movie as I do the next nerdy blockbuster.
I had a great time crossing over with The Nerd of God.cast. I make a point to download and listen to their show every time a new episode drops. If you’re a fan of The Christian Nerd, then I can’t imagine you also wouldn’t enjoy The Nerd of God.cast.
