The Octagon is the Slack group for The Christian Nerd. In it we discuss all sorts of topics. This week alone we’ve shared prayer requests, discussed how much is too much PDA and the cost of flights from Toronto to Hawaii. It’s a forum to discuss all things Jesus and all things nerdy. If you’re interested in joining, please send me a direct message on Twitter or an email.
Earlier this week my podcast cohost, Ron, posed the question: if you could only take three video games and their respective consoles with you on a deserted island, which would they be? The question assumes a television and electricity, but apparently no way to contact the outside world.
Here are the video games I would take with me to the deserted island.
Oblivion – Xbox 360
Not only is Oblivion one of my favorite games ever, but it’s definitely got a high replay value. I started and restarted a few times, putting in 10-20 hours each time before finally locking in and eventually playing a character for 120 hours. I completed almost every quest in the game, but there are always more Oblivion gates to close. I could play through the game as all the different races and classes, there would be literally thousands of hours of gameplay. After a while, though, I might get sick of dungeon crawling, but then I could just spend my time breaking into people’s houses and running around cities.
Final Fantasy III – Super Nintendo
Final Fantasy III is actually Final Fantasy VI, but I first played it as Final Fantasy III on the Super Nintendo. I didn’t own a Super Nintendo so I could only play FF3 at my friend’s house. He preferred to keep the same team together, so he had one team of four really powerful characters. I was more egalitarian in sharing experience points, so my characters were all fairly even. When my friend got to the end of the game he couldn’t defeat Kefka because it required all of the characters. Instead he used my save and beat the game with all of my characters. I actually never beat the game, but I like to think I did. If I had Final Fantasy III on a deserted island I could finally fulfill my destiny of 23 years.
Sid Meier’s Pirates! – Xbox
Sid Meier’s Pirates! was originally released for Apple computers in the 90s. I played it a lot on Apples and PCs, but the gameplay wasn’t that polished. In 2004 an updated version was released for the Xbox and I lost many a night’s sleep sailing the high seas and plundering the Spanish Main. This game was simple and lacked the depth of either Oblivion or Final Fantasy III. In spite of that, though, I absolutely loved it. I started and completed so many careers, loving every minute of my pirate life. No one can live on role-playing games alone; sometimes we all need a little simple fluff.
I haven’t played a lot of video games lately and starting a new job hasn’t left me with much free time. However, if I were on a deserted island I would have a lot more time. I could bring games that I haven’t finished like Mass Effect or Destiny, but if I only get three games, then I want to make sure I’m going to enjoy them.
What three games and their respective consoles would you take with you on a deserted island?
