One of the main impetuses for this blog was the fact that nerd culture is going main stream. Nowhere is this more obvious than at the box office. Some of the most successful movies this summer will be based on comic books, theme park attractions and other nerdclinations. Here is a preview of the nerdy movies coming out in May and June.
Thor – May 06, 2011
I’m mostly excited for Thor because it’s directed by Kenneth Branagh and stars Captain Kirk’s dad. Really, though, I’m seeing Thor as an opportunity to learn about the Norse religion. I figure if I can learn about Thor and their other gods, I’ll be much better equipped to evangelize to all those blond haired and blue eyed Swedes.
Priest – May 13, 2011
I probably won’t see this move. It has vampires and vampires scare me. I do like the premise, though. In the future, men of the cloth become super heroes and get all kinds of weapons and gadgets to defeat the vampire scourge. I really like my pastoral work as it is but it would be sweet to have throwing stars shaped like crucifixes.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides – May 20, 2011
I’m apparently one of the few people who actually enjoyed the second and third Pirates movies. I’m looking forward to the further adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow, especially since they got rid of Will Turner. I don’t understand how Legolas got turned into a wimpy, little boy scout. Legolas stabbed an Uruk-hai with an arrow and then shot another one with that same arrow. All Will Turner ever did was make swords and empty vows with reckless abandon.
X-Men: First Class – June 03, 2011
Other than The Dark Knight, X-2 may be the most perfect super hero ever made. Even though it didn’t exactly follow the X-Men mythology, it was a great movie. Since then, though, my favorite comic has fallen on hard times. X-Men 3 was a travesty worse than nipples on the Batsuit and X-Men Origins: Wolverine looked so bad I didn’t even watch it. I don’t have high hopes for First Class but the trailers are trying to make me a believer. It is set in the 60s which hopefully means Magneto will fling a bus full of hippies through the air…and that would be before he turns evil.
Super 8 – June 10, 2011
I loved J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek; along with A Knight’s Tale, it’s my go-to movie when packing or cleaning. Super 8 is shrouded in secrecy but it looks like a monster gets loose in the early 80s Midwest. I was born in the Midwest in the early 80s so I can only hope that the monster makes it to Chicago on September 26, 1981. I feel my parents would have told me if a monster attacked Chicago on the day that I was born but it’s possible they forgot.
Green Lantern – June 17, 2011
I’ve had a bit of a man crush on Ryan Reynolds ever since Van Wilder. The only thing I really know about the Green Lantern is that his weakness is the color yellow. Why do DC super heroes always have the most ridiculous weaknesses? It’s sad to think that someone who can do anything with his ring could potentially be defeated by a banana…or a crayon…or Curious George’s owner…or the right kind of fever…or Bumblebee…or Mt. Dew. I know he hasn’t been seen in the trailers, but I think this will be Hal Jordan’s archenemy.
Even with skipping Priest, that’s still 5 movies to see over the next two months. That’s a lot for me considering the last movie I saw in the theatre was Tron: Legacy. Should I happen to see any of these movies, I’ll post official TheChristianNerd.com reviews and try to find some spiritual talking points.
Of these six movies listed, which are you most looking forward to?
