With the influx of super hero movies this summer, I thought it would be fun to look at Bible characters who could have been super heroes. Here are five Bible characters who could stand alongside the Green Lantern and Captain America.
Elijah
One of my favorite Bible stories is Elijah’s showdown with the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel. Like the Human Torch, Elijah calls down fire to consume his sacrifice. I can just picture Elijah flying around in the Fantasticar with the other members of the Fantastic Four. With Elijah on the team, he could just challenge Dr. Doom to a sacrifice showdown whenever Doom wanted to conquer the world. With a simple prayer of “flame on”, Elijah would defeat Dr. Doom and save the world. Elijah would be so great he would basically become the Justin Timberlake of the Fantastic Four.
Goliath
Goliath was a giant and battle-hardened warrior. The entire Israelite army feared Goliath and stayed inside their tents whenever Goliath challenged them. Goliath was strong, fierce and had giant weapons, which is the perfect combination for a super hero/villain. Marvel actually had a super hero named Goliath who could grow to extraordinary sizes. Marvel’s Goliath met a fate very similar to the biblical Goliath. The Bible’s Goliath was killed with a stone from David’s sling, while Marvel’s Goliath was killed with a bolt of lightning from a clone of Thor. They basically died the same way.
Samson
Samson really was a super hero in the Bible. He had super strength, awesome fighting skills and he struck fear in the hearts of his enemies. Like most super heroes, he also had a weakness: women. Samson wasn’t the first man taken down by a woman and he definitely won’t be the last. Like all great super heroes, though, he sacrificed himself for what he believed in, even after facing humiliation at the hands of the Philistines. Though, to be honest, most super heroes should be embarrassed already for wearing their underwear outside their pants.
Simon the Sorcerer
As recorded in Acts 8, Simon the Sorcerer impressed the people of Samaria with his prophecy and acts of sorcery. Simon the Sorcerer was the Dr. Strange of Samaria. I don’t understand how Dr. Strange is a super hero. That’s like saying David Copperfield or Criss Angel are super heroes. They’re not super hero material; they’re charlatans who wear poofy shirts and distract people with attractive assistants. I don’t know if Simon the Sorcerer walked around Samaria with an assistant and a rabbit in a hat, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
Jonah
Jonah was the Aquaman of his day. And like today, the ability to talk to fish was still pretty lame.
Thosee are five Bible characters who could have been super heroes. None of them are as cool as Batman or Wolverine, but some of them could definitely give Superman a run for his money.
What other Bible characters would make good super heroes?
Hmmm...what about the Woman of En-dor (Samuel 28:3-25)? Sort of Jean Grey à la Dark Phoenix. I would put her in the super-villian category though.
Ooh. That's a good one. I hadn't thought about her. That's the scariest story in the whole Bible.

The three Hebrew boys they were in a fiery furnace and didn't get burned up. I would say that is a superpower!
I would see Judith as the Black Widow. She was beautiful and intelligent and she didn't need any superpowers to defeat her enemy.
