Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 came out this week and it is poised to be the biggest video game ever. The Modern Warfare series is one of the most successful video game franchises ever and has led to some late nights and “sick” days.
Its release has also led to some criminal activity.
A Best Buy customer in Colorado threatened to go “modern warfare” on Best Buy employees when the store mishandled his preorder of the game. Come launch the store didn’t have a copy for him. He was threatening the employees and asking when they got off so he could wait for them in the parking lot. The employees weren’t sure whether or not the customer was serious or a lunatic or a serious lunatic, so they contacted the police after he had left the store. The police pulled the customer over and charged him with disorderly conduct.
Another, more totally awesome crime happened in France. A van carrying 6,000 copies of Modern Warfare 3 was hit. Thinking he had been in an accident, the driver got out of the van. Two men shot tear gas at the driver and stole the 6,000 copies. Instead of going “modern warfare” on the truck, these criminals totally went “Italian Job” and made off with almost $550,000 worth of product. No one really got hurt so I can appreciate how gangster this story is. However, one of my best friends works for Activision and worked on Modern Warfare 3. Hopefully this crime doesn’t affect is job security; that would be significantly less gangster.
I got my copy of Modern Warfare 3 and I’m really excited to play it. In the end, though, I know it’s just a game and not worth threatening someone or committing grand larceny. It’s also not worth losing sleep, ditching work or missing a quiet time to frag some fools online. Modern Warfare 3 time is good, but not so good to displace God time.
Do you have Modern Warfare 3? Do you plan on getting it? How does it fit into your schedule?
