This week at camp we have been singing Chris Tomlin’s song “Our God”. I really like the song but its bridge has made me think quite a bit. Here is the bridge:
If our God is for us, then who could ever stop us?
And if our God is with us, then what could stand against?
Every time I song those lyrics there’s always this voice in the back of my head. It’s a small voice of doubt. I don’t doubt that God is for his children. I don’t doubt God’s ability to stand up for his children. I doubt that God would want to stand up for me when I’m intentionally disobedient and walking away from him.
Not only does sin separate us from God and the life for which we were created, but it also creates doubt. When I’m intentionally disobedient I wonder if God is going to hold up his end of the bargain. I know our relationships with God aren’t transactional but, when I’m mired in sin, it’s hard to see that truth. Instead of seeing the truth of God’s unconditional love and amazing grace all I can see is my sin.
And when all I can see is my sin, I wouldn’t want to be for me so why would God?
That’s the amazing thing about God, though. Even when we were his enemies, even before the blood of Jesus washed us clean, God still loved us. God has always been for us: when we were trapped in sin and death and now when we walk back to sin and death.
God being for us isn’t dependent upon us; it’s dependent upon God.
But the more we depend on God and flee from sin, the better we’ll understand the depths to which God is for us. And the more deeply we understand that, the more willing we’ll be to do his work in this world.
Because if our God is for us, then who could ever stop us? And if our God is with us, then what could stand against us?
How have you experienced God being for you?
