The summer is known for its super nerdy mega blockbusters, but the fall has its fair share of nerdy movies as well. None of these movies will be as big as The Avengers or The Dark Knight Rises but some could still be pretty good. Here are some of the nerdy movies coming out in September and October.
Resident Evil: Retribution – September 14, 2012
This movie already came out last week but, whether I previewed it early or late, I wouldn’t have seen it. I hate zombies; they legitimately scare me. I’ve never played any of the Resident Evil games and I’ve never seen any of the Resident Evil movies. Resident Evil: Retribution was number one at the box office this past weekend, grossing $21 million. I watched a few zombie-free clips from Resident Evil: Retribution and it didn’t look very good. I suppose as long as they keep making Sony a decent amount of money, we’ll get a new Resident Evil movie every few years. At some point, though, Milla Jovovich will be the last remaining human on a planet overrun by zombies. Before that happens Sony might just want to pull the plug and let the series die once and for all, with no chance for regeneration.
Dredd 3D – September 21, 2012
I never saw Sylvester Stallone’s Judge Dredd. (I was about to say that it also starred Sandra Bullock but, after watching the trailer, apparently that was another movie). While Judge Dredd looks like a cheesy, 90s action movie, Dredd 3D looks like a totally awesome, gritty action movie. Dredd 3D looks a lot darker and more violent than its predecessor; it also stars my favorite Rider of Rohan and rebooted Dr. McCoy, Karl Urban. I don’t know if there will be anything terribly redeeming about Dredd 3D but it looks pretty awesome. The only insight I may come up with is that Jesus doesn’t want us to murder people and God is the only judge.
Looper – September 28, 2012
Looper is another movie that looks totally awesome. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a hitman who murders people for the futuristic mob. Problems arise when the hitman is tasked with killing his future self. The movie has been getting rave reviews and the concept is thoroughly interesting and original. Time travel is always a fascinating concept; what about our pasts would we change if we could? What could we learn from our future selves – if we didn’t kill our future selves, that is?
Frankenweenie – October 05, 2012
In 1984 Tim Burton directed a short for Disney titled Frankenweenie. Disney felt that the short was too scary for young audiences so they fired Burton for wasting the company’s money. 28 years later Disney is releasing a full-length Frankenweenie feature, directed by the same man they fired. Frankenweenie looks like Tim Burton’s regular fair: dark, whimsical and odd. The trailers make it look a lot like a stop-motion version of Edward Scissorhands, just with a reanimated dog instead of a scarred Johnny Depp.
Cloud Atlas – October 26, 2012
Cloud Atlas is based on a book I haven’t read. I watched the trailer and I still don’t know what the movie is about. It’s got Tom Hanks, it looks like it goes through a bunch of different time periods and there are some flying machines in a futuristic setting. It looks like a bit of a mindbender but I’ve always enjoyed movies like that.
These are the nerdy movies coming out over the next two months. I don’t know if I’ll see all of them but there’s a good chance I’ll at least catch Looper and Cloud Atlas. I love seeing new movies, partly to be entertained but also to find God’s truth in what I’m watching.
Which of these movies are you looking forward to?
Cloud Atlas is about a group of people being drawn to one another across their different reincarnated lives.
